totaled 71 C30 repo truck

2 year project totaled in 10 minutes i let my 18 year old son drive and the truck needed a allignment so nwhile on the freeway we were on a decline doing about 50mph when the front tires started pulling left so instead of slightly moving the steering wheel right he hits the brakes hard and we bust a uturn on the freeway hitting the center didvider crashing on my side my shoulder knocked the door off the hinges and well it got real ugly so here are some pics of the truck doing its first repo and the rest are pics after the wreck

Re: totaled 71 C30 repo truck

Here are some pics of my 68 GMC I will be building from the wrecked 71 chevy parts, whats crazy is about 4 months ago I bought this 68 because it had a 2003 chevy dually disc brake rearend and I wanted to use it for the 71 and so I did, looks like I will be putting it back on, I only paid $400 for the 68 and to think I almost sold it.

How does a slight pull turn into a driver locking up the brakes, yanking the wheel and totaling a vehicle SMH

Re: totaled 71 C30 repo truck

Because the truck did need a alignment the wheels would go left a little and when it happen to me I would just bring the steering wheel to the right a little to correct it but my boy hit the brakes thinking by slowing it down was going to correct it but thats neither here nor there because what ever happened were still here so, I really never should of had him driving until the alignment was done.

Re: totaled 71 C30 repo truck

Holy crap that was a hit! Hopefully you had 3 point belts? If not... ow!

Glad your both ok!

Without the weight of a bed on the truck, I can imagine it's really easy to spin it out and lose control.

Re: totaled 71 C30 repo truck

The brakes never locked up and he never yanked the steering wheel, prior to him hitting the brakes the front wheels were already pulling left so when he hit the brakes that just made the front wheels pull even harder left in the direction they were already going and even though we might have been slowing down we were already doing about 50-55mph so it was just too late to do anything bout time we hit the divider, like I said it was one of those things I could show you better than could tell you but I ain't trying to show this again.

No 3 point belts just the 1971 issued lap belts and as a result I have a nice swole bruise on the right side of my waist.

Re: totaled 71 C30 repo truck

Thats true about the bed not being on the truck but i had 22.5 super singles that weigh about 380 combined and i think the weight of those tires is what kept us from flipping.

Sorry to hear about the wreck but the main thing is both of U are OK.

I think you need to put that rear end back under the 68 to by looking at this picture.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: totaled 71 C30 repo truck

Definitely the axle will go back along with the sneeker wheel lift, 2 rear rims but a new set of semi truck adapters and 2 new front rims and tire the 71 gad a 2006 silverado Ss LQ9 and matching tranny that wasn't damaged so that will be going in as well, the only thing from the engine that needs to be replaced is 1 ignition coil.

Re: totaled 71 C30 repo truck

Still glad you're OK! I'd highly recommend a set of 3 point belts. REALLY EASY to install (shoulder bolt is already in the cab, just has a plastic plug in it) and there's literally hundreds of options that will work, everything from fancy aftermarket ones that try to imitate originals, to fairly priced ones (About $70 per side http://wescoperformance.stores.yahoo.net/resebe.html ) to scavenged junkyard parts (just don't take them from a wrecked vehicle, find one with a blown motor or something) I've used them out of 73-87 GM full size truck and I've used the 1st gen S10 ones.

Re: totaled 71 C30 repo truck

If I had a 3 point seat belt my shoulder would have never hit the door and maybe it wouldn't have been as bad for me so on the 68 GMC build I will definitely have that style of safe belt.

Re: totaled 71 C30 repo truck

Glad to hear everyone is ok.
Had you ever done a "panic" stop in this truck before?
With the extreme differences in tire height, I wonder if you need an adjustable proportioning valve to help dial in the braking.
Plus with no weight on the back of this truck,... I could see it coming around on you fairly easily.
Glad to see you rebuilding/reassigning the parts.

I was going to ask what seat belts were in there too. *All I have are the lap belts also.

Glad you guys are OK. I was going to say something smart alec but there is no need for that. Bad things happen.

Re: totaled 71 C30 repo truck

As a lot of you know I rebuild wrecks for a living[well some you that come to the paint section might know that] And while they do happen I hate to see it. Sheet metal is replaceable our loved ones are not. It will be a good mind clearing exercise to rebuild that truck I know you hate having to do it over again, but each time if you get to thinking about all of that work think about the times you have shared with your son, truck or not that will put a smile back on your face.
