96 vortec to 68 swap question

I have a friend willing to sell me a 96 vortec engine with 140000 miles complete with everything plus the transmission for $600. I'm having trouble finding much info on this specific swap. What am I getting into? Just get the Ecm flashed? Is this as simple as bolting in and wiring the ignition in?Any help at alll would be appreciated.

Re: 96 vortec to 68 swap question

If you want to keep the fuel injection I would do a 411 PCM swap. Google it. The early PCM's are difficult to flash. You have to remove the PASS KEY security stuff from the PCM program & turn off the rear O2's. I've done the 4.3 vortec/5 speed swap in a Luv truck. Its not a bad project if your decent at wiring.

You can save a lot of headache & heartache by buying an intake/carb/distrbutor/electric fuel pump.

Let me know if I can help.

If the injection is gonna go you could change the cam out with another and then put on an intake like the RPM Air Gap from Edelbrock anda good Carb, and it would be a monster! but be aware that if you do away with all of the injection stuff your troubles are not over, as you now have to have a way for your trans to know when to work or not. The trans functions are all computer controlled. There are stand alone systems out there but it would almost be as expensive to do that as it would to make the injection work too

For the most information in the shortest amount of time just type the words "vortec swap" into the GOOGLE search box at the top of this page, click on the circle in front of "67-72chevytrucks.com" and click on the GOOGLE button. You will find lots of threads on the subject. (mine came up with 28,400 hits) Just make sure the thread you are looking at refers to your style of truck. (Hits will include all years)

Re: 96 vortec to 68 swap question

My 96 GMC did not have the pass key security or any other on it, so if you were to keep all the sensors, ie. rear O2s, you wouldn't have to flash the PCM to make it run

Re: 96 vortec to 68 swap question

Thanks guys. From what I read on a 96 vortec it's a swap it in and use the o2 sensors. I hope....still $600 for motor and train is cheap. If anyone else has done this specific '96 vortec swap please chime in!

Re: 96 vortec to 68 swap question

Car craft had a story recently on a black box that mounts on the side of the 4l60e/ 4l80e. Its a cheaper alternative to a stand alone controller. Rosslertrans.com under pn it says "call" 350-350-5000
140k is kinda getting up. There in miles. I would do a compression test first, if that passes a tear down and check the bearings before going to the trouble of swapping it in.
