looks real good body wise except for that dent in the cab behind the door. I mean that it looks good all over.guess that the spare gas tank is where the spare should go' wonder what he means by big 6 cyl. would of it have had a 261?

Re: 61 4x4 CL Find

Turns out this was a forestry truck, the paint code is "SPEC" . It originally had 16 inch rims, not the 17.5s that are on it now. Bed of the truck was repainted and it has a GMC gate on it. There was a gas tank under the bed that's gone now, has the switches on the drivers floor for the dual tanks. Drivers door was opened to far and creased, drivers rocker is pushed in also along with the dent in the rear of the cab. I will have some better pictures tomorrow. Looks like something was cut into the dash above the radio also. Was wondering to why the engine is partially orange also ? Interesting truck, I like it !

Re: 61 4x4 CL Find

Wow, not your typical find. This truck is an ex Bell Telephone judging by the original special order color. IMO, the wheels are also original to the truck, might have had other tires on it before, but when it comes to sell for top dollar, the original super hard to find 17.5" wheels and new tires magically come back on, the green paint on spare is the give away. The 17.5" wheels were the maximum optional wheel size for all 60-66 1/2 tons, both 2WD or 4WD, rarely ordered by the general public, usually found only on fleet or government vehicles. Originality on a 4X4 on this early of a year, is especially hard to find.

I think that the 17.5 wheels were the bare basic wheel on which the trucks were price based. they were actually the cheapest. and every thing else was optional. I know that this may not sound right, but usually found on fleet or government vehicles. they were usually down to the nitty/gritty when bidding against the rest of the manufacturers on fleet and gov. bids. dealers very seldom ordered with those tires and wheels(they ordered what was common or popular in their area) except when they wanted to put that blow out price on a gigantic sale with full page adds. new p/u's $1395.00. these were bare bones trucks and I think if you can find records of these deals, these were the tires and wheels that were on those basic trucks..
I don't know why or how the 17.5 were ever the cheapest factory tire and wheel.
one has to remember then that these trucks werer bought for working and those 17.5 gave them more underneath clearance also. they weren't bought for highway queens

Re: 61 4x4 CL Find

Its been interesting on this truck, current owner bought it the way it is, last owner did all the research stating its a forestry truck. If it wasn't for all the holes in the body, roof, back window panel and doors and then some biggies in the dash . ( not rust but drilled ) I might be a buyer. But the new pictures show a bunch of issues. Looks to be rust free as far as no rust holes in the floors, fenders, inner fenders or doors. As for the theory of "standard 17.5 rims" Data book states 15s were standard and 16 and 17.5 optional. Owner says previous owner added the 17.5s but in the picture of the spare tire it looks original paint AND current owner says it is the original ?? but then states the 16s are what came on it ?! Let me know what you think. 115,000 miles on it, block color tells me engine has been worked on etc.

Re: 61 4x4 CL Find

That truck makes me happy in my pants. I love those old 4x4's with the "pizza cutters". I grew up on a ranch and remember as a kid playing around in the truck boneyard, where old trucks were retired. There was an apache 4x4 and two dodge 4x4s. Never thought about it then but those trucks would be worth some money now.

Agreed is Def not worth anywhere near 12k. But it'sa cool truck that looks like it's been used as a truck.it had character and I like that. All the holes are a bummer.

12500 is on the high side for sure but look at what the rusted junk at lambrect went for ....not much rust here if any ..look at what some of the guys on here go through back east with rust some may have been very happy to pay 12K not to go through that hell... i would say that this truck did not have a step side on it before "fillers are missing" and "GMC tailgate" maybe a utility bed??? has hand throttle .. i cant figure out what was in the dash hole next to the radio kinda strange the delete plate looks like it hangs over that hole some it may have had some kind of radio in it as the hole in the center of the roof would indicate

Jason--you do all your own work. for someone that doesn't get dirty or have the know how and has the $$. just might be a deal. If you had somebody do all the work you have done on your tk, what would be the $$$? If i had $$ i would buy it, just to have 2. LOL--

it may have had a pto on it at one time. I do have a pto cable and another cable for the hydraulics for the bed; 65 C930.
That body also could have had a few panels change over the years. one thing if they were gov or fleet trucks they would have been maintained fairly well as long as they were in service
as for holes they could have been for emerg lights or whatever was required for them to do their jobs.
I can remember that we used to service the game wardens truck. they use to rip a lot of things off underneath. just keep putting it back the way that it is supposed to be

Re: 61 4x4 CL Find

He made mention that previous owner said it was ordered as a chassis cab, The GMC tailgate kinda makes you think the bed could have been changed. He has a winch with it so that may be why theres a PTO handle coming out to the right just under the gauges. There was a spotlight on the roof and possible another light in the center of the roof, not sure what the two holes are in the firewall by the delete plates. Good eye on those stepside fillers !! The front bumper is held on with the wrong bolts, possibly had the winch up front on a different bumper at one time.

Funny how when you see something at first it looks perfect, but as you keep looking it gets more and more dents!

Re: 61 4x4 CL Find

the dents are an easy fix--no rust is just unusual for this kind of truck. the 2 little holes to the right of the radio plate look like a cb mik hanger (mine had on in the same place) I wish mine had no rust like this one. also what hub are on the ft axle?

Yes, it does have battle scars from being used as a work truck, but I agree, no rust is unusual, indicating it came from a dry environment. I am 100% positive it was a Bell Telephone truck with a utility body on it originally, not the stepside bed on there now. .http://editorial.autos.msn.com/blogs...a-ee682dfa2e15
