Smile What stall speed to use?

I'm having a new 700R4 built, as present one has 'high-mileage leaks & looseness'. Going with a mild shift kit, one my reputable, local guy says will shift soft enough in normal driving and harder with increasing throttle. Using ~27-inch tires and a 3.73 differential--and this has been a quite satisfactory combo for 2-3 years.
Tranny man asked me what stall speed convertor--lockup type, of course--I wanted to go with. There will be no 1/4-mile runs and mostly around-town driving; maybe 1 @ 150-mile trip a year. Engine is stock 96-97(?) 5.7 vortec with 4bbl intake and carb and headers. And I DO use the lockup, planning to do the same w/new tranny as present one:locks up when it shifts into overdrive, yet I have a lockout switch run under dash to completely bypass the lock-up when I desire.
Knowing practically zilch(zero)about stall speed convertors, and never driven one for any length of time, I need to ask which one to go with. He says he'd rather me specify this parameter, altho' he's calling all the other shots AFTER learning how I drive and what I want to do with my truck.

In my opinion, a 2500 would work just fine since it's a cruiser.

Sounds like you are in the exact boat as me regarding driving style, up level etc.
In my 700r4 I put the lockup switch and have a 2500 rpm stall.

I'm very happy with the set up.

since engine is stock and assume the tranny is stock. use a stock converter what ever that may be.

A 2400-2800 rpm stall should be right on the money for a stock 5.7L Vortec.

If it were me, I`d run the BM hole shot its only 2100 first stall above stock, it will generate less heat, out side of OD, lower rpm drivibity will be better on the fuel.

whats wrong with a stock one? engine is stock,3 73s are going to get you movin quite easy.i have 700r4 3 73s 305 and 285 70s and can smolder tires with ease if I choose.my truck is soon to have 5.7 vortec with cam and will still have stock converter.by 305 I mean chev. not gmc v6

I am getting ready to do a T5 to 700r4 swap in my 66.

After way to much brain racking, I decided to go with a FTI street brawler 2400 lock up torque converter. I heard/read many good things about FTI and the price was on budget.

My set up is:
-3.54 rear gear
- 29" tires
- turbocharged inline 250

What are you running for a trans cooler?

Lowest stall, stock converter you can find. I would suggest one from a Caprice/Roadmaster/Fleetwood. 1800ish.

I was always told to keep it below your cruising RPM on the highway. maintaining RPM below stall speed causes it to constantly slip and will burn your transmission up.

That's a good idea if you're using a non-lockup TC. With a lockup TC, that becomes a non-issue.
