One Piece Drive Line?

On shortbed trucks, whats stopping a guy from going to a one piece drive shaft?

nothing. people do it all the time. but on lowered trucks its better to have a slipshaft driveline

Absolutely nothing, but money!! Mine has a one piece on it, much better that those aggravating carrier bearings that fail all the time.

That being answered (thanks gents!), are the drive shafts out of long bed trucks long enough or would it have to be custom built?

I'm not sure on the long bed, but I think that it would be too short. Mine was custom made and I am not really sure why unless it was to do away with the two piece original, because it was a factory SWB with auto and it still has the same setup.

1 pc shaft

I have 2 shorty's and they both have 1 pc driveshafts. 1 has a long tailshaft th350 & the other a short tailshaft th350. No problems with either one. They're both lowered 4" in the rear, 2 1/2 in the front.......Zoomy

I've got a one piece in my 70. I'm dropped 6" in the front and 5" in the rear. Long tail (9" length) t350 and no problems, tailshaft bushing no irregular wear and no vibration/rubbing noticed.

I got my one piece from a 1980's shortbed Chevy at the local scrap yard.

the drive shafts in a long bed are way too short. as i recall it is only 3.5 feet on each side of the carrier bearing

I'm running a 3 on the column, and switched to the 1-piece. The driveshaft I got was from a short tail TH350. The 3-speed and TH350 shafts are the same length. If I'm not mistaken, I think it was 84" from the center of the rear u-joint to the back housing of the transmission where the tailshaft protrudes. A friend making a '77 Mailbu into an enduro race car removed the same size shaft from the '77, a "7-foot" shaft.

84 inches? You must be talking about a longbed. Mine is 59.5 inches from center u-joint to center u-joint. (same tranny)

I'm gonna measure mine today. 59.5 is standard on the later shortbeds? Sure would be nice to be rid of that squeakin carrier in my step.

I don't trust it from when I replaced the rear seal in my tranny. I noticed there is no slip between the diff and the carrier? My thinking is as the suspension travels up the shaft moves forward? Wouldn't this stress the bearing and holder? Just thinking.
