Re: MY6 New Process A-883

Watch out! My 2wd A833 uses a TH350 output shaft, and my 4wd uses a TH400 shaft and is a different length. The rear extensions will not interchange.

FWIW, my 2wd is hydraulic clutch and aluminum case, and my 4wd is iron case manual clutch. I belive there are at least 3 bell housings, Mopar pattern manual clutch, Chevy pattern manual clutch, and Chevy pattern hydraulic. I have seen an A-833 with Saginaw pattern ears. I belive both of my bells are Mopar pattern with the larger opening for the bearing retainer.

Re: MY6 New Process A-883

I have done alot of research on this trans.GM recommends Mercon II.All the mopars recommended gear oil.I have read alot about the main shafts wearing out,and also the case egging out,but only on the GM version.I talked to my trans guy,and he said the ATF does not give much cushion. The gears are hardened, with bronze bushings.I am about to install one my self,in my 75 C-10.
I plan on using amsoil 75-90 severe usage.

My old man has a 4 speed superbee runs gear oil and shifts fine. And is able to hold that 496 without an issue.

Re: MY6 New Process A-883

I have one in my 82 K25 & it has 80-90w.I got the truck from a neighbor that had it since around 85-86 & all he ran in it was gear oil as well.Seem to shift ok too, there was a reason he used gear oil,but I can't remember why now...

I should have said the problems only seem to occur on the GM aluminium case versions.Mopar used these transmission on everything from slant 6 to hemi's.They are basically the same internally.Oh,also,it was not mercon GM recommended, but Dextron II.
