Quick question please help

Hey Guys. I have my square stripped down to the chassis. Yesterday I began to sand. I had an area about 3 feet long stripped down to bare metal on just the top of the drivers side of the chassis. Unfortunately an emergency happened at work and I had to take off before I had a chance to roll the chassis back in the garage.

Living in Canada and it being Winter, by the time I got back the area was well rusted. Rust is nothing new for the truck, it's covered, but this is rust that is directly on bare metal, which is unprotected from any type of paint or primer from the factory.

My question is will this hurt the chassis? If so what can I do to counteract any damages? And when I sand again will resanding this area take off too much metal?

Remember it's bare metal that rusted, it was not covered by any paint or primer.

I had that with my 96 ranger. I just sanded it again n couldn't tell.

Anything I've done that I can't paint or primer right away, I've used Eastwood's Fast Etch (used to have a different name, but this is their improved stuff). http://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-s-fast-etch.html It leaves a zinc phosphate coating that won't rust. All you have to do is spray it on when you're done grinding/sanding. When it comes time to paint, you just prep like normal (thinner, pre-paint prep recommended by your paint manufacturer, etc).

BTW, the Fast Etch would save you from having to resand what you've already done, in addition to putting off having to hurry to get to the painting stage.
