Sounds to me like your grandpa got tired of the truck leaning to one side for whatever reason and had some leafs added.
I have a cab over with a slide out on the passenger side and I have to keep my air bag higher on that side to keep my truck level until I fill up the fresh water storage tank.... Just my guess based on my own experience. Its cool that you have his truck! Enjoy it.
