oil bath breather restoration? new filter hair available?

I pulled out the horse hair (I think that is what it is) in my oil bath breather so i could have it powdercoated and was wondering if anyone else has ever done this and what did you use in place of it? I did keep the old stuff but it looks fairly dirty and when i removed it the hair broke down into small pieces that the engine may suck up now. is there maby a special foam or replacement hair to make it like new again? Rod.

I was thinking foam as well. I'm sorry, other than that, I wouldn't have a clue what else you could try.

Re: oil bath breather restoration? new filter hair available?

you can buy a roll of stainless steel wool. it is packed fairly tight and would be hard to get back in there but might work. similar to pot scrubbers. is there a certain air flow cfm or something that an air cleaner needs so the engine breathes good?

Re: oil bath breather restoration? new filter hair available?

I never took the OE fiber out.
I just soaked it in simple green, then rinsed it clean.
The metal mesh I use as noted above, is what I put it the oil itself and stand it on its edge around the inside of the filter. The oil wicks itself up the metal mesh, and adds extra filtration for the dust.

I don't know if this was original, but it's been that way as long as I can remember in my original set up. So I just continue to it, and I do see it helping since it does get dirty.

Just my opinion, but I wouldnt use steel wool if you shake it alot of small pieces fall ouy of it. On the rigs we use "filter blankets" they are available at Aklands. They come in all thickness and sizes and would be available locally. Plus they are made for air filters so it would be safe. Hope that helps.

did you decide on anything yet? I too am a little scared to use the old horse hair stuff. it is brittle and don't really want that gong through my engine.

Re: oil bath breather restoration? new filter hair available?

well I got my oil bath air breather all done. First I powder coated it. Then I used this element http://www.steinertractor.com/ABC422...th-air-cleaner. I needed 4 bags. It took a little time to get it all even in the top but it worked out very nicely. Here are some pictures. just have to put the decal on it yet that member LocDoc made me and it is complete.

Wow, Chewy that looks fantastic! I had pretty much given up on using the oil bath. But yours looks better than new. As soon as I return from my deployment I'll give you an update.
