My weekend trip to Asheboro, NC...

I live in Eastern NC (New Bern to be exact) and made a trip to Asheboro, NC to visits some family for the weekend. I was also going to look at a potential new parts truck ('65). The truck I went to check out, didn't work out. I'm just trying to focus on the work I've got going on now with my cab rust problems right now. On my way to Asheboro, I noticed a C-60 and pulled over to talk with the owner. To make a long story short, he didn't want to sell or part with any of it unfortunately. I wanted that grille! Haha! I did get some pictures tho.

I also saw this nice tow truck at a dealer in Asheboro.

I also spotted this truck too. Just wanted to share a few pics!

Re: My weekend trip to Asheboro, NC...

Yeah, I asked if he'd sale the whole truck or parts. He just wasn't interested in either. The sheet metal is pretty much gone except for the grille. I did leave him my contact info, so maybe one day he'll surprise me with a phone call. I love the tow truck...would love to know the history but it was raining and cold and didn't want to drag anyone out in that weather. So, pictures will have to do

The last pic looked like it had an original sliding rear window.

Re: My weekend trip to Asheboro, NC...

Looks like we have a few more new gems in NC. Maybe some of them will come to the forum one day.

Too bad the 65 didn't pan out. I've got a lead on another 63 here in Fayetteville if your still looking joesscamaro....maybe we can get you into a knee knocker!!!

Re: My weekend trip to Asheboro, NC...

Woogeroo- No problem..glad I could get a few pictures to post up. It's unfortunate, the owner said it was a running/driving truck when he parked it about 7 years ago, and now the motor is locked up.

JWheeler- What exactly did you do in New Bern? My family and I have been in the New Bern area as long as I can remember and some.

1963c-10- The '65 I went to look at wasn't a bad truck. It had the original radio and a few other cool original parts. I'm in the phase with my truck right now that I just need to focus on finishing welding in the new panels in the cab and get it running. Once I do that, I'll work the front end pieces and drive it some. I have a couple of long beds now that are both kind of rough, but I may be able to repair them over some time. I'm just looking for an easy way out with the bed I've looked at that craigslist ad you posted several times. I'm just not quite ready to pull the trigger on another parts truck just yet. Thanks for posting it though!

Re: My weekend trip to Asheboro, NC...

I was stationed at MCAS New River for 3 months right after returning from Vietnam. We visited New Bern a couple of times, but I can't remember much because I wasn't there very long and it was over 40 years ago!

Thanks for sharing the photos and stories.

Saved this one from the crusher. Thinking of wiring up the headlights to work, still attached to the barn though.

I'll be checking through our local yards here in the next week or two...I'll keep my eyes peeled for a big truck grill.

Re: My weekend trip to Asheboro, NC...

Joe,

I am not as attached to that grill as my wife is, but I may be able to talk her out of it if I have something to go back up there. I do need to tell you that it does have some problems. I originally bought it to put on my own 65 project. Getting it from the scrap yard was an adventure, as I literally pulled it off of the donor truck as the guy was pulling it into the crusher!! The grill has some pretty bad rust holes in it, and also the bolts were rusted so they broke when I was removing it from the dump truck it was on.

I am going to a couple of pick and pulls this weekend, so I will look around there for you as well. If nothing else, I may find something to replace that one with on the barn, and maybe we can work something out. Not sure yet, but I will let you know.

I just picked up a C20 off CL for $350. Seems like I see 60's trucks everyday now that I never noticed before around NC.

Future plans... body work, flat black, & bag it. Already have a 83 long bed for suspension and drivetrain parts. The truck still has a inline 6 w. 3 speed.

Day 1

Found a hood & fleet side long bed recently also.

Are you getting rid of the cool hood? Are you nuts? Sell it to us.

Good luck with your project
