Pwr steering pump bracket?

While removing the 283 out of my '68 preparing to install my new engine I discovered the power steering bracket is broken. I am assuming it is factory. If so what years of manufacture can I get to replace it.
Thanks!

Re: Pwr steering pump bracket?

You'll have to determine if you have a short or long water pump. The 283 diddn't come in the 68, 67 was the last year, so somebody else put the engine in. They could've used factory 283 brackets or later model long water pump brackets. What side is your alternator mounted on? Drivers side would be SWP, pass. side would be LWP.

A pic would help identify which one you have.

As an alternative - I have seen so many different mounting options for these trucks that if you still have the piece that broke off I'd weld it or have a shop weld it. You can get into a mess with having to get the right one or shimming one to line up the belts and pulleys.

Re: Pwr steering pump bracket?

Thanks, I may look into having it welded up.

I don't know how the 283 ended up in there. I believe this truck is a franken truck. The vin on the door jamb is not factory but the number matches the serial number on the frame. Has a good Oklahoma title though. no SPID either.

I have one of the Goodwrench motors with summit doublehump heads and a 262 comp cam going in. Hpoe to push 300 ponies.

That 283 was one of the best little engines that gm came out with -durable and reliable back in their heyday. Had a 55 chevy 2 door sedan and a 56 chevy 2 door hardtop with that engine in them.
