Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Here is mine.
If I seen most of the comments of this thread I have... 1961, 4x4, 1/2 ton, surburban(or carryall), from Oakland(CA?), production #8476. I'm not sure if the stamped 061 or the 97 on both sides of the Chevrolet are stock or added on by someone. Does any on know or have an idea?

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Hmm, I will have to do some checking around, My dad had mentioned that too, thinking it was a old forest service rig because of the darker green color. I will see if he and I can find out more info and get more history on this rig. That sure would make a good story about it!
Thank you, jonzcustomshop.

Can someone give me a hand with this one? There's a couple things I can't seem to figure out. Truck's in Canada, but that doesn't mean it was made here. It's a 65, btw:

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Don't think this has been mentioned before, but for the body(4th digit) a 3 designates a cab and chassis.
Also, in my vin, KC3836T120636, what does the first K stand for? The truck is a 1966 2wd 1 ton, 157'' wb. I decoded the vin already, and the only thing that i didn't get was the K and the 38, which i assume is for the 1 ton part. Thanks in advance for the advice. |

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Hello, I have been told several times that I have a rare truck. It's a 1961 longbed stepside 1 ton c30 with 4 on the floor.. This decoder doesn't specify 1 ton nor the 61 longbed stepside. Is there a reason for that?
Also, I've been looking and can't find another owner so im curious to know if i have the only one. Im not sure if thats a good thing or not but it tikles my curiosity. I was checking out the 1961 Chevy truck series poster i didn't see it there either. I'll post a few pics for you to see it for yourself. The one circles is the short stepside. My vin Number: 1C364B116824

My 1962 VIN's sixth digit (assembly plant) is an "L". It doesn't match any of the assembly plants listed. What the L?

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
I got a number off the left front frame just in front of the a-frame. 5S203265. Can anyone decipher this? I looked at a GM site and it said the S was for school bus. I don't think this short wheel base step side truck was a school bus...................was it?
Thanks Ron |

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Well now I have a dilemma. The title I was provided says the VIN number is 4C144S118226. Does anyone know how to trace this down? There was not a VIN tag on the door opening. I was told I am the third owner of this vehicle. Can anyone tell me some of the differences between a 64 and 65? I took the motor out and according to my engine guy it was a 65 283. But he did say that it could of been a late year 64 with a early built 65 283. Just something sounds fishy here.

Does anyone know who can do a title search on the partial number I got off the frame?
Thanks Ron |

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
ser# that you did show(frame) should match what your documentation but that doesn't seem to be the case does it. sometimes you have to look at the top of the door jam to see a vin plate.
by the sounds of it perhaps you should go and ask for your money back unless the PO can straighten up the documentation and make it legal. ron |

Re: Where is my 60-66 Chevy or GMC vin number?
Well I have talked to the PO and he said that number was the one given to him in 2009. And he was not aware of any other numbers. The frame did have a lot of oil and dirt on the frame so I believe what he said. He has registered it every year and said no one has ever said anything to him about it. He is going to try and find the original owner to see what they say about it. I tried putting the number( on the title) in and it showed up in the data base. I put the number in off the frame with a 5c144 before it and it showed up nothing in the nation wide data base. I am going to go to the Texas DMV and have them do a title history search done on both numbers to see what that tells me. The truck has a current registration on it until 1-15 and when I transferred the title they did not say a thing about it. ??????
Also the tag is not on the door frame. The saga continues. Thanks for the reply. Ron |
