Quetion regarding Original in cab fuel tank

I have decided to hold off on the under bed tank conversion, funds are not permitting it at the moment and it can always be done later. Here is my question: To make the in cab tank work what is all that I need ? one walbro fuel pump and a new sending unit ? I got my fuel line kit that just came in but I was talking to a guy and he says I need a special sending unit made for EFI ??...Thanks for help on this.

Re: Quetion regarding Original in cab fuel tank

I couldn't find the thread on it, but I plan to solder two bungs in the bottom of my tank (one on each side), tee them together to a fuel pump on the frame rail and use the existing fuel line as a return. That's about the best plan I've seen to date.

No special sending unit required. Just an inline 255.

Re: Quetion regarding Original in cab fuel tank

I stuck a 255 lph Walbro on the end of the stock sending unit using a kit made for a '94-'97 Mazda Miata. I wouldn't do that again - it's VERY loud in the cab - but that goes to show just how much you don't need an odd sending unit. An external pump would be quieter, but I was just curious about what it takes to retrofit in-tank pumps.

I used the vapor line for a return.

Re: Quetion regarding Original in cab fuel tank

I did the same with the return line but put the pump in the line down under the cab.

Re: Quetion regarding Original in cab fuel tank

Thanks for the reply guys I really apreciate it, I would like to place the pump outside the cab just for noise purposes. One question tho do you need to have a return to the fuel tank if your engine is a returnles ??

You need a return to the tank. With a returnless rail, you need a Corvette filter/regulator (Wix #33737), Run the feed to it and the return to the tank from it, and the feed to the rail out of it. You don't need a special sender, but you will need to add a return somewhere into the tank, I added one to the sender on my blue truck. LS1 I was just checking out that link and I must say excellent work showing how it all goes together but I have one question; for the return line I was wondering if I can use a piece of that old return line with the filter from my old engine ? { the one that turned out to be a 2000 engine } I never returned that fuel line with the engine and the guy said to just keep it so I did. but how did you bend the tubing without kinking it ? If I can use a piece of that would I need some sort of tool bender ?...thanks

Re: Quetion regarding Original in cab fuel tank

You'd probably be better off going to the parts store and buying a new piece of line. You could use the old line like you say, but its harder to bend and flare. If you started with a new piece, it will be flared on the ends, so you could cut it in half, and use one piece for the sender, and the other end for the piece to hook to the sender and run out the bottom of the floor. You will also need some kind of tubing bender. Some auto parts stores will rent tools, might check with them, or you could probably pick one up fairly cheap at harbor freight.
