I want to put 35"s on my truck but will i also have to change the ring/pinon? Whats a good gearing for mostly street-but some mudding/offroad?

I had 35s w/ 3.08 gears in an 85 K5 and it sucked! Couldn't use OD on my 700r4. I have 33s w/ 4.10 gears now. Gearing is a little on the low side. I can start off in 3rd gear. (have a SM465)
I'm going to assume you have a 350/th350 and 1/2ton running gear for 35s I'd say no higher than 3.73 gears but 4.10s would be better.

4.10s work perfectly with 35s. It will rev 2565rpm at 65mph in road gear which should be perfect.

I DO ALL GEAR CHANGES MYSELF, ORDER THE GEARS AND A HALF INSTALL KIT FROM JEGS AND FIND SOMEONE TO DO IT. THE AVERAGE PRICE IS $250 PER AXLE. GM AXLES ARE THE TOUGHEST TO DO.....RAT

Depending on what axles you have it could be easy enough to do yourself. It takes alot of patience to do it the first time especially with GM axles like Rat said. Yukon gears come with a booklet that is very helpful. There are also some websites that have good guides. A 1980 chev would have a 10 bolt front and 12 bolt rear if it's a half ton. You will most likely have to change the carrier in the 12 bolt. The 10 bolt should be OK. By the way, if you want to go with 3.73 gears I have a very good used set $75 or a very poor used set free. I also have used carriers for 10 or 12 bolts. Just let me know what you need.
