New Member with a 66 longbed fleetside

New to the forum. I picked up this 66 chevy longbed fleetside in December of 2009. Paid $1800 for it... probably overpaid a little for it, but the rust isnt too bad for truck i found up here in PA, and it runs. Mileage on odometer is 15,xxx and son of the PO told me that this could be correct because the guy only drove it 1 mile back and forth to work. Anyways last fall i went to move it and lost the brakes and smacked a tree stump and smashed the passenger side of the bed in. Almost got rid of it then, but that same week i found a bed that was made into a trailer for $500 and it was rustfree in great shape, so i bought it. So i got about $2500 into this thing and havent put any work into it yet. I've been very busy with a few other projects but i hope to get a little done on the bedsides over the winter.

Well, here are some pics of truck last year sitting in front of my house before i smacked the bed up. I'll be sure to post some pics of it now, my replacement bed, and progress pics.

Welcome to the forum

Looks like a decent truck to work with. That's too bad about the bedside. Are you going to replace just the one side?

Re: New Member with a 66 longbed fleetside

Well, i havent posted for a while, but i have been surfin this website for info... My goal is to get this thing on the road soon. Im going to make a list on here and track my progress on here so others can follow and chime in. Things i need to do:

1. Dual master cylinder and running new brake lines, hoses, and replacing all brake hardware.
2. Replace emergency brake cables
3. Rebuild carb
4. Tune-up
5. Clutch
6. Change out bedsides
7. Front cab supports
8. Exhaust

Wow i have a lot of work to do just to put on the road.

Re: New Member with a 66 longbed fleetside

Well, temps were in the 60's today, so i got the truck fired up and moved it down to my driveway. Ill be doing all my work there. Have some other projects goin on as well... So i took advantage of the weather and switched intake manifolds on my 89 camaro... Im switching that from tbi to carb. Once i get everything buttoned up on that ill be starting on the 66.

Re: New Member with a 66 longbed fleetside

Been a while since i posted, but i finished my 89 camaro and started on my truck recently. I switched to a dual master cylinder and stripped my new bedsides to bare metal. Im hoping to get it road worthy by summer.

Welcome to the forum and great looking truck. I think you did fine on the price. Glad to see your getting it back on the road and looking forward to pics and updates on progress!! My stepside was originally sent to PA from the Baltimore plant.

Re: New Member with a 66 longbed fleetside

I plan on cutting coils to drop it a bit. I am going to keep the stock 15 inch wheels on it, any recommendations for tire size with the drop?

Re: New Member with a 66 longbed fleetside

With those tires on there now you could probably easily get away with a 2/3 drop. Welcome to the forum! And neat truck to!

Re: New Member with a 66 longbed fleetside

The tires on it now are bad, i might cut 1 1/2 coils in the front and cut whatever i need to in the rear to level it out... Just trying to get an idea what size 15's guys are running with that much drop
