Hooking up reverse lights to a TH400

My truck is a combination of many different ones. It has a TH400 auto trans. The previous owner was just using a toggle switch to turn on the back-up lights.
Should this be hooked to a switch in the transmission or on the shifter?
The transmission has a 1/4" male terminal on the drivers side down low. I assumed it was the switch I was looking for and since it only had 1 terminal it grounded it when reverse was selected. I connected my test light from the batt. pos. to this terminal but it's grounded no matter what gear the trans. is in.
If this isn't the back-up light terminal where is it?
Also, the truck will start in any gear; where's the park/neutral start switch located?

Re: Hooking up reverse lights to a TH400

The neutral safety switch and reverse switch is made together on these trucks for automatic transmission. It is on the steering column down low toward the firewall. I found a decent pic on Post #14 of this thread. Hope this helps.

Re: Hooking up reverse lights to a TH400

The trans connector is for the kick down solenoid. Its activated by a throttle mounted switch either on the engine or the throttle pedal inside on the later trucks. This needs to be active to assure proper trans pressures.

The reverse lamps are, as said, are activated by the column mounted NSS switch.

Probably be a good idea to open up a factory manual and look at some wire schematics and trans service proceedures.

* VIN/Model Decoders
* Power Team Charts (engine/transmission/gear ratio)
* Post Your Pickup SPID Blazer SPID Suburban/Panel SPID
* RTFM
... Read The Factory Manuals... download 'em here
