There is no vin as we now know it- trucks were registered by either the engine number
or the body serial number. Unfortunately these numbers were not stamped in multiple
spots. Do you know which number was used on your truck?

There are some vendors that sell blank ID plates. Why not buy the truck, by a plate & stamp your vin numbers on the plate. Then install the plate on the door post before you have it inspected.

That beats where I got mine. b http://www.classicparts.com/1951-52-...tinfo/33-013/#

72 Duster that number is stamped in the area next to where it say serial number and should be fairly deep stamping. My original plate is painted over, primered over and generally ragged but you can readily read the number stamped in it.

Here is the info to decode the vin you posted

5 = Kansas city Mo Factory
J = 1951 year model
P = 3100 Series
H = August build month
28365 production number

Re: 51 5 window chevy truck

The number shown decodes as a 1951 1/2 ton. It is the body serial number which would have been stamped into the Plate as listed above. If this is still with the truck and your
state will use it go ahead. These plates were attached with clutch head screws not rivets.
If this is used to register the truck I would stamp the number into the frame and other
major components to help ID the vehicle in case of theft. Remember this is removable
and therefore easy to change. Better than having it registered by the engine number that
also has usually been swapped out on a 60 plus year old truck.
