Carbon Parts

Just wanted to gauge interest in what parts everyone would want to have built out of Carbon and or fiberglass.

67-68 hood is done.

Nice work, I checked out that hood at Good Guys last week end. I would love a 3" Cowl induction, but my pocket book says NOoooooo.

That's sweet!. What does the underside look like?

I might be interested in a fiberglas version for my 72?

Re: Carbon Parts

Weights...
Stock hood 69#
Aftermarket cowl 1 68#
Aftermarket cowl 2 79#
Carbon Hood with Ram Air 26#
Hood minus Ram Air is probably 2-3 #s lighter

Re: Carbon Parts

We are looking at building inner fenders that will clear 315 front tires with max clearance. It can be built in Carbon Fiber or Fiberglass. We all know its a pain to arch and stretch the panel out so this should be a nice upgrade. There will be different versions depending on what front suspension kit you are running. But we need to know there is a demand for the part. So who is interested and what's your thoughts.

We are also looking at building a smooth cowl with wiper provisions. It can be built in Carbon Fiber or Fiberglass. We all know its a pain to smooth the panel out so this should be a nice upgrade. But we need to know there is a demand for the part. So who is interested and what's your thoughts.

Re: Carbon Parts

I worked on a carbon fuselage jet for 13 years so something like that would really fit not just my truck but my personality. I use to do alot of hand made carbon fiber stuff in my free time. So with a hood like that everyone would know whose truck it was without even seeing me.

Just cant swing the cost.

Re: Carbon Parts

Any hard to get part would be nice to be had of carbon. I wonder if weight savings would translate into meaningful mileage increases.....

Right now I am looking for stepside rear fenders and one with the cutout for the spare tire on the driver's side.

Money is too tight for me to be buyer but I hope your business does well.

Re: Carbon Parts

Chris, I know production numbers rule production cost/sale price. But what are you estimating the hood to retail for?

Re: Carbon Parts

Here is the pricing without ram air. The hoods sell for $2,200 USD in full Epoxy Carbon..... The are also available in Epoxy Carbon & Composite $1,700 USD and Vinylester Composite for $1,400 USD plus packaging and shipping charges....

We have several people who want the 69-72 hoods built we just need a few more before we commit to building them. These hoods are not a easy part to produce plus the Carbon is not pieced together its one wide sheet.

Re: Carbon Parts

I wouldnt think you would have much of a problem selling them out of the Vinylester Composite. Its a proven technic used commonly in boats. If I was at the point of needing just the hood done I would probably commit to one.

I would like to see the underside.

Are you doing these by hand there in the shop or do you have access to a shop with pre-preg and an autoclave?

Re: Carbon Parts

The hoods are made at Carbon Kustoms in Canada we are helping Albert out on the truck parts making the bucks and promoting and distributing the product.

Re: Carbon Parts

That is some quality work....hmmmmm... may have to hold off on some other projects for one of these.

If I wanted to get in on one of the Vinylester Composite hoods who would I contact. Is this a deposit type scenerio or just put your name in the hat sort of thing

That hood is just not cool. I can see the core support showing through the openings which look out of place on the clean front of that truck. As for ram air, ther are much better ways to accomplish that without changing the lines of the truck. In 2009 I was at Firebird when Brad Coleman hit a coyote at 190 MPH. The coyote didn't fare well as the pictures show but they also show how a professional racing car builder does cowl induction. The cowl on our trucks is open, making the addition of an airbox that takes advantage of the high pressure region at the base of the windshield easy. That makes a lot more sense than gills in the front of the hood or jacking up the center of the hood 3 inches which spoils the clean lines of the front of these trucks.
So, if you made the airbox and flex coupling to fit a holley 4150 double pumper I'd buy it! I just wouldn't pay $2200.00 for it

Re: Carbon Parts

I think that hood is gorgeous and compliments the lines of the truck very well....Much better looking than those cowl induction hoods. But I wouldn't pay that kind of money for it, jmo.

Re: Carbon Parts

So you could run this version of the hood and run the air box as shown in the above pic or not.

Or run the Ram Air setup and hook it to your carb if you desire to. Just try not to hit animals is the moral of the story.

Re: Carbon Parts

Being that i'm "carbon fiber dumb", what is the difference between the full Epoxy Carbon, Epoxy Carbon & Composite, and Vinylester Composite?

Is it weight? Strength? Appearance?

What kind of weight delta is there between the 3 choices?

I would be interested in the inner fenders. Also wondering about a 69-70 hood?
