looks a lot like the turn signal canceller to me.

That's how it goes JointTech. Keeps them square balls in the grooves of the cap. Cap pushes on the centre and pushes out the square balls. Usually with a lot more grease on the whole assembly.

It slides down the shift tube, or up it. It sits against the round plate that the springs rest against.

No, the shift tube inside the outer jacket (the painted tube). I'll snap a picture a bit later.

also the method of oiling the column I've seen is to hose it down with pb blaster etc. Thats fine for an old one that is still in the truck but since I have it apart any suggestions on places to grease and what type of grease to use?

I was thinking over greasing up the center shaft and shift tube with some grease.

sorry for the delay with the picture. I just rebuilt my column a week or two ago, and this is where it sat on both columns, non-tilt, 1969, and 1971.

I didn't remove the shift gate or the springs at the bottom, because they were in great condition and function perfect on the other column, so I slid the shift tube felt washer up over the lip for the neutral safety switch/brake switch, and off that way. I don't know if anyone has pointed you to the column assembly/disassembly section but it was pretty helpful for me. It can be found if you search here for service manual. Someone was gracious enough to have all the years put into PDF's. Best of luck and don't hesitate to ask questions.

I have the service manual. i dont know why i didnt think to look in there.

did you grease or oil yours before reassembly? I didnt take apart my shift gate or springs either.

I did blast and paint them though and now hear a crunchyness so Im going to take the column back apart and clean the grit out and oil it.

Then take pictures on the reassemble so the next guy wont have to ask so many questions !!

I assembled the column but I don't have a steering box yet so I can't really put the column in. I greased any touching surfaces. I sprayed PB blaster in the spring area really good until I couldn't hear any grit in there. I've yet to put grease in that area, but I will coat it and try to pack the grease down in there as best as possible. I also greased up the upper housing really well. The Shift tube itself doesn't come in contact with anything between that felt washer and the upper shift housing, so I didn't see any need to grease it. However, if you are worried about surface rust you could always paint or coat it with a thin layer of grease.

Not to hijack the thread but, does anyone know where to buy the rubber boot that fits over the afore mentioned part with the blocks and springs that is full of grease? Slip joint, universal, etc.....I can't find that part anywhere.

It's not available new. Your only option is to find one in good used condition.

actually its available at Classic Heartbeat and inline tube has it although they think it only works on chevelles or something
its called a steering shaft boot.
you also need the new clip. steering boot retainer clip.
