First C10! 1975 4.1 inline 6

Getting ready to buy my first C10, been wanting one for a while and finally found one that's a decent price and actually runs! I've had chevy trucks before but nothing anywhere close to this old. This one has a 4.1 inline 6 with a 3 speed, was just wondering what everyone thought of that motor, I'll probably keep it for a while at least since it is already running, What upgrades does everyone recommend? Anything to help gas mileage? I'm thinking already I need to put a different transmission in it, great torque, but man she's screaming if I take her out on the highway. Recommendations, thoughts?

250 is a great motor and will live forever if you take care of it, a popular swap is to put a third gen camaro 5 speed behind it then it should lope right along at highway speeds, also a little cam headers and at least a 2bbl carb if not a 390 holley barrel will reall wake it up! visit cliffordperformance.com for bad ideas

^^this^^

And since the truck is a '75, it probably has the "integrated" style head (head and intake are one casting). Some people like them, personally I had nothing but trouble with the one on my '75 GMC (they don't dissipate heat worth a damn). If you want to keep the 6, I would suggest sourcing a '63-'74 194/230/250/292 head. They bolt right on with no modifications and if you can find a 194 head, it'll bump your compression up a bit due to smaller combustion chambers Earlier style head with a Clifford intake, big 2 barrel and Langdon's cast iron duals and it'll be a nice lil runner!

Awesome thanks for the tip on the transmission, probably the first thing I'll change actually.
