Yeah, I've always used a timing light to test for spark in my vehicles. I just clamp it on the plug cable.
You can also hold the plug against a grounded surface and see if it sparks when cranking. If it does, then a compression check, or better yet, a leak down test would tell you if it's burnt valve, rings or valve guide fouling the plug. I've also found more new defective spark plugs recently than I recall ever having.
