Re: TX '64 Under Way

I've never worked on a 64 pickup, but of the other GM vehicles I've worked on from the 50's to the 70's, the door glass is attached to the regulator so it will need to either be removed or held in place somehow. I'd recommend taking the window out if you're going to have it apart for more than a few hours. You wouldn't want the window to fall inside your door and shatter.

As for the vent window, if you leave the door glass in, the vent window won't need to come out. If you take the door glass out, sometimes you can get it out with just loosening the vent glass, sometimes you have to take it out. It's only because the door glass uses the vent glass for the front run channel that you might need to take the vent glass out.

Re: TX '64 Under Way

Look at Sharps40 thread starting on post #156. He does a good job of photos and description on how to get it all out....

Re: TX '64 Under Way

As Aggie hinted: if you pull the entire assembly, window and wing window, you will see how easy it all is.
In fact, I would venture to say it is easier to reassemble that way, instead of trying to work around stuff you didnt want to loosen up or take out.

At the end of the day, it is silly easy to do and you may think of some things you want to do/add to the door while you have all that stuff out. (tinting the glass or sound deadner inside the door.)

Re: TX '64 Under Way

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I did some more reading last night and it seems you guys are on point. I've also got a few rolls of sound deadner being delivered today, so I'll coat the inside of the door and door panel while I have it apart. Appreciate the help!

The gas tank I'm using is a Mustang tank, 65-68 I believe. We got this one locally here in Dallas at a Mustang shop. You can find them online for about $150 with a sending unit. Hard to beat the price, especially since they fit so perfectly in between the rails. Since I switched my gauges over to Auto Meter, I ordered a fuel gauge to match the sending unit for ease. Here's a link to an online retailer:

Re: TX '64 Under Way

for the gas tank, where did you mount the filler neck? Is it in the bed floor?

No bed floor yet, still completely open. I should be getting the floor in around May'ish. I'm tinkering with the idea of having the center section lift vs. a stationary bed floor. I really like what coulter here on the boards did with his '66 bed floor and may copy it. We'll see...

If I go the stationary route, I'll bring the filler neck up to the bed floor.

Re: TX '64 Under Way

Got the driver's door done last night: changed the exterior handles, door lock, door handle relay, window regulator, applied sound deadner to the door panel and as much of the door as I could, put in new interior handles (window and door opener) and added the arm rest. Hoping to get the passenger side done this weekend.

Thanks for the guidance. Your tips helped a lot as I worked through it.

I still have a bigger gap than I'm comfortable with between the exterior door skin and the vent window rubber seal. In our bathroom at the house, I looked at the shower door rubber seal that goes between the frame and the door glass. It's a small enough seal that I think could be used to fill the gap on my truck window, so I may swing by the hardware store and grab some to see if I can make it work.

Re: TX '64 Under Way

Hello, love your truck actually just spent over an hour searching for this thread so I could stare at it some more haha. Do you know what size tubing they used for your step notch? Im going to do my 65's the same way since I feel that is the strongest way to notch these trucks but im not sure what would be the best size to use. Thanks in advance
