I've used uship.com with good success. Just specify clearly what you need (type of transport equipment, dates etc)
I've had guys come through transporting large empty deck-over trailers and load them with my stuff and do it cheap. A couple months ago I had a guy come by with a used horse trailer he was transporting and we slid a '12 Honda Pilot engine in it...

Would I be protected in case of accident or theft, how would I know or confirm that a shipper would be legit in that sense?

I'd love to and won't rule it out. I have round trip tickets already for previous planned trip. Since I got such a deal on the truck my brother and I figured it would be worth it to pay the expense of it being delivered.

Glad he's taking the truck - that was a good find. May be worth posting pics to the original paint thread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=562071

I have the # of a guy who does enclosed shipping based out of UT I can send but enclosed may cost you more. Also, the guys at Mild to Wild may know a shipper.

So, did you have to drive to Pembina and meet the UShip driver there or can you gets the goods dropped oof at a storage place and pay the UShip person with a credit card over the phone. I'm thinking co-ordinating to meet with the UShip driver could/would be a pain..

I met them, but..... How it works is you pay into a Uship account and are given a number, so when it is delivered, the parcel place can call you and you give the driver the number and he gets paid from Uship, no credit number involved with the driver. I used paypal to further insure my transaction.

Re: Shipping a 72 longbed to Chicago

I have to give another plug here to my broker, Henry Metzger www.hjmshipping.com. Henry has shipped two trucks for me and has come through both times. Using a broker you will pay a bit more than on uship but Henry knows truckers and doesn't do business with the thieves and ***holes. He's been in business a long time and for me it's worth an extra $100 or 2 to have an expert on my side.

If you tell him "Jimmy from New Jersey, the pickup truck guy" sent you, I can't guarantee you'll get a discount but you'll make him laugh.
