Mini Starter questions
I'm going to order a Hitachi style mini starter from Summit.
Do these mount the same as a GM original ? Is a bracket or brace required with these mini's? How do I use the Summit discount codes that get posted on here all the time ? Thanks for any help |

Is this the one you're talking about? I got it yesterday from Summit. Came with mounting bolts, shims, and everything.
Shipped it back to them today.

Due to the way it's made, it hits the header worse than the stock one does. I tried adjusting it every way too.
Don't worry, I sent the headers back too. Two months of hassle trying to get a starter on this thing finally pissed me off. Starter and headers cost about 600 bucks combined. I returned them all and am going to use a stock starter and exhaust manifolds. Should leave me with about 350 bucks left over too.

That's not what I wanted to hear. I'm trying to get more clearance for my headers, and I'm also replacing a badly worn flywheel

From your other post it seems your using it on a bigblock. I'm not that lucky. I'll give it a try.

Yeah, I got you.
The big block auto tranny flexplate is only available in the large 14 inch diameter. That was the problem. If I mounted the starter in the smaller 12.75 inch flywheel mounting holes, there was miles of clearance. But, no one has a small diameter flexplate for a 454. A small block is easy to get the smaller flywheel for and you wouldn't ever have any problems. Heck, depending on your exhaust, there might still be lots of room even if you use the bigger flywheel and outer starter mounting holes.

i got the same starter on a sbc and it hits my headman headers, i had to loosen the and then install the starter, then retighten the header bolts. overall i really like the way it cranks my 10.3:1 compression but it fits worse than the stock starter. it does in fact turn my engine like a stocker tho. -kyle

i'm using hedman headers and a mini-hi-torque starter no cl;earance or any other problems with it in 21/2years 40k miles

You could go with a Delco mini starter, I had very tight header clearance and this one solved my problems.

I used a starter from a later model Chevy truck (88-up I think). It's smaller all the way around.

I'll try and dig up the part number, these were factory starters for the 502. I paid about 100 bucks shipped for mine off ebay.

I'm running a 14" flywheel, headers and a stock starter with the offset pattern.....has worked OK for the past several years, but tends to get a little heat soaked if i run it hard now. I think i just need to replace the battery cables and throw a heat shield on it.
Anyway...i was changing the oil on my mom's '01 S10 4x4 with a 4.3 and got a look at the starter.....it was a very compact mini starter with the same offset bolt battern as the one on my truck (for some reason mine is only drilled for the offset bolt pattern instead of both). I think if i ever go mini-starter i will just buy one of those from the GM dealership. I believe it is the same one that Blazerman posted. Oh, and a Delco rebuilt starter costs around $75 last time i checked from GM.....should be alot better than a parts store cheapo reman.....i have proably gone through 3 or 4 of those! When my current cheapo starter dies that is what i am planning to replace it with.

Kyle, 168 tooth is the 14" flywheel, 154 teeth is the 12-3/4" flywheel

mini starters
I'm surprised at all the problems people have had with mini starters and header clearance. I have had about 5 different part numbers of hooker headers on my truck with both big blocks and small blocks and have never had a mini starter hit any of them. I have tried the standard style and the Powermaster XS and have had great luck with all of them. The Powermaster is a bit on the pricey side, but very nice. I think most all mini starters are clockable now so I would give it a try.

Yeah, mine was clockable and like I said, I tried to install it clocked all 3 ways and it would hit the tube every way.
