VIN Question 1971 GMC vs Chevy

I found this:

Vin Decoder

Looking that over it appears GMC and Chevy had the same vin structure prior to 72 when they added another digit to the front.

So prior for 1971 is there anyway to tell if a vehicle is a GMC or a Chevy just based off the vin?

Re: VIN Question 1971 GMC vs Chevy

Bill, There is a difference in Chevy and GMC in every year, up till 1972.
The 1967 GMC used a 14 digit Vin. 1967-1971 Chevy used 12 digits.
1968-69 GMC used a 12 digit vin, with a different format than Chevy, and some of the codes were different.
1970-71 GMC used the same 12 digit format as the 68-69s but with different model number codes.
1972 Both the same 13 digit vin. Same decode

1967 -1971 GMC built in Canada used the Chevy format and codes with one exception. They have a 9 in between the Chassis type and Engine type. The 9 denotes GMC.

Re: VIN Question 1971 GMC vs Chevy

To show the differences let's do a truck as a Chevy and as a GMC.
Let's say its a 2wd,I6,1/2 ton pickup, long bed, fleetside

1967 Chevy CS147S100001 USA and Canada
1967 GMC CS1590DSC1001A Canada C9S1471100001

1968 Chevy CS148S100001 USA and Canada
1968 GMC CS10D-SB10001 Canada C9S1481100001

1970 Chevy CS140S100001 USA and Canada
1970 GMC CS134-SZ10001 Canada C9S1401100001

Bill, If you have any questions just let me know. I'm always happy to help. And Thanks for checking out my VIN thread.
