paint melt down

dont know what happened but i had a paint melt down just on a part of my hood and one fender last bit of mixed paint think maybe thinner breakdown or something

What did you use for paint/primer?

urethane for both but it only happened with the last bit of paint in my gun i think something was on the fender cause its just one spot about 2foot x 2 foot section on the fender and part of the hood im just going to wait till tomorrow and sand it down and re shoot that fender the rest came out fine

it really looks messed up i hope i can fix it i just took these pics a little confused on what happened seen paint lift but this kinda just fell apart

Looks like bad surface prep to me from the pics in post 5. Can't blame the paint if it can't stick to an unprepared surface.

ya im kinda thinking i might have missed wiping that spot with wax and grease remover i remember stopping to go help my son on the other side of the truck i must have missed it cause its only in one spot

not product failure, something on the surface like you suspect.just a major case of fisheyes. if you used activater in the paint/clear you should be fine. wet sand with a little dishsoap in the water, and then before painting again wipe with the grease and wax remover.

Urethanes are very unforgiving of surface contaminants. Fixing it will require removing all of it and starting over. Do yourself a favor and don't use a chemical stripper; use sandpaper.

never got to the clear it melted on first coat of paint stopped right away i knew something was gone wrong figured if i put another coat on that would just be more to sand lol

ya im going to sand it all off i have been 2 yrs on the truck not going to take the easy way out i got a couple d8 sanders and a 11 yrs old son that i know will get in trouble for something soon it will be a good punishment for him lol

No need to go crazy here with the D.A. sander. I know the first impulse may be to sand it back down with 220 grit and start over from that point, but you may cause as much harm than you would be fixing. Since there has been no clear or anything like that you can go out now if you want I know it is getting late but you may want to move along, try to smooth it out with some 400 grit wet with Dawn dish soap and plenty of water, this will lube up the paper and let it slide across the paint instead of "digging " into it. Sand it down until it is smooth then take the gun and draw back a couple of inches from normal and blow in some paint into that area[do a search on here and see if you can find my post about blending paint, it prove helpful to you on this little spot] then you should be able to continue on with the paint job. i will try that sounds a little easier then starting over

funny thing is even the color is off this was the first coat looked like and there is a big diff i think i got a bad can of paint and i know now its the wrong color was supposed to be flat matte black but looks to glossy
