Power suggestion

Hey guys I'm trying to do this on a budget... but i'm stuck on buying a camshaft ls2 timing chain, ported ls6 oil pump, ls7 lifters, ls2 lifter trays, btr springs and retainers, hardend pushrods. OR If I should just replacing the timing chain oil pump and just put the engine in, problem with doing the whole cam, lifters, spring etc is that It will end up probably breaking my nv3500 or cause my clutch to slip (dont want to buy a new clutch, current one is 1 year old) how bad would a stock 02 5.3 with like 140k miles and long tube headers be in comparison to a stock 350 with a 4brl, edelbrock intake and rv cam?

Bad in terms of what? The stock 5.3 would get better mpg, and make about the same (if not more) power than the rv cam in a small block.

If you do decide you want a cam and such, do all that timing chain and oil pump stuff at the same time while the engine is out. It makes life much easier, especially when doing the oil pump since the o-ring can be such a pain.

Re: Power suggestion

I was mainly speaking in terms of power and yeah I was planning on doing the cam lifter springs swap, but im just gonna do the oil pump, timing chain couple other things and stick it in the truck all cleaned up and painted. If anything i'll do the cam swap in the truck wont be too hard anyway, theres plenty of work room in the 73-87 engine bays anyway.

Re: Power suggestion

If you are tearing it down to do the oil pump and chain, why wait to do the cam? It is so much easier if you have it on a stand IMO.

Re: Power suggestion

Cause If I get the cam the guy who speced it said 5.3s with his cam make 320-340whp, I know my oem rated clutch will slip at wot no doubt, I know my nv3500 will **** its self on like the 4th time I beat on it. Trucks still an open diff with crappy 8'' wide tires. The trucks been sitting for about a year now so I just really want to just throw the 5.3 in with less power and just be able to drive and worry about the performance parts later.
