Whats a good affordable exhaust/muffler?

Hey guys...just trying to see what you guys have out there? I just got my 68' c10 and it currently has a straight pipe to 2 glasspacks on right now. It sounds really good and loud but I feel like it doesn't have good high end power. I was thinking of taking out the glasspacks and running straight into the mufflers. What do you guys think?

I'm looking for a loud and yet affordable mufflers to add to it. Also if you have pics of your exhaust that would be awsome! I currently have pipes running to both sides of the truck running out before the rear wheels.

Thanks!

Power wise a decent glasspack is as close to race exhaust has you can legally have on the street. The only reason it would lose power is if its stopped up. Do you have 2 glasspack mufflers on one pipe or do you have dual pipes?

i have dual pipes setup right now. i was thinkingnof taking them out and adding flowmaster 40 series mufflers on each side. . im hopong to get better high end power with it

You are highly unlikely to get any more high end power by switching out the mufflers. You will however change the sound big time.

I would be doubtful that a turbo style like flowmasters will make anymore streetable power. Don't get me wrong, the are good mufflers and sound good on a sbc. Just don't expect a load of power gain.

do you think its better to keep my striaght pipe with the glass pack on then to get the most optimal power?

Re: Whats a good affordable exhaust/muffler?

Honestly you probably would not notice a power difference between the two setups. Your choice in a street exhaust system is more about the sound then power. I have thrush glasspacks on my truck because I wanted the old school hot rod hellraiser sound. If I build another truck it will have raptor turbo mufflers on it. They have an aggressive sound at idle and acceleration but quiets down at cruise.

Re: Whats a good affordable exhaust/muffler?

Don't take this the wrong way, if you are trying to make more power, the muffler is the last place you should be looking, especially if you already have a straight through glasspack design. There are loads of engine specific options you need/can be looking at to create more top end power. We need a lot more specifics as to your engine, internals, intended RPM range, ie: 5k limit, 6k limit. To start, these trucks never had top end power as the engines were intended for low end torque, so you'd be overhauling your engine to assemble components that all create power within your specific RPM range. Engine building is a lot more than slapping on pretty parts that advertise horsepower claims in their ads.

On a good day switching from stock mufflers to a straight through design is worth 10 horsepower. On a bad day you lose 20 horsepower by setting your timing incorrectly or having fouled plugs. There are much better places to chase HP than mufflers.

UMMM Fellers ? He is in CA I would venture to bet he has 2 catalytic converters and NOT GLASS PACKS going into his mufflers ! BIG DIFFERENCE ! And if there clogged from reaming the truck trying to find high end power from a probable smoking engine and those converters trying to burn the oil well...You get the picture .

1975 was the first year cats appeared on trucks under 6k GVW, and then only one.

I'll have to retread the post, did not think that's what he has. I have seen a few folks try run dual cats but the California air resources board rejects those for smog compliance. Only y pipe, into one cat, then to muffler or mufflers (what ever was factory) would pass visual inspection. Only in the last 10-12 years have dual cats, on trucks, come factory.

Re: Whats a good affordable exhaust/muffler?

I have the summit race mufflers and they are a knock off of the flowmaster 40 series and are only $30. can't comment on there performance because truck is a long way from done and I have a 170hp 305, but they sound great.
