Re: What penetrant do you use on rusty bolts?

If there's a lot of rust/corrosion, I use Kroil. It can leave a strong odor. Otherwise, I use Gibbs Brand on just about everything else (drag cars, hot rods, etc.), including using it as my primary CLP on my guns - its the only CLP I use on my M4s and shotguns.

Better as a water displacing ("WD") oil than a penetrating oil.

I guess I'm cheap. Heat up then stick it with a candle. Let the wax penetrate then off she comes!

PBlaster. Have a VW bug in the shop now that has been sitting outside since 1986. All the brake lines and bleeders came loose no problems!

ZEP 45. I used to sell the stuff and it works pretty well. Twister (also by ZEP) is another good one.

Re: What penetrant do you use on rusty bolts?

Funny you should ask, today I started a resto on a 71 Long Box for a long time customer. Trying to take apart the bed I found all bolts were rusted well. I used PBlaster on them and I can now say they all came out. So I must say PB is the bomb.

X2…I've used Gibbs Brand since the '80s for my racing and fabrication, and it's the only CLP I use on my rifles. It works on about 80% of the rusty fasteners. The other 20% I use Kroil from Kano Labs.

Re: What penetrant do you use on rusty bolts?

If you do a search, someone posted an actual test of a bunch of different penetrants with the torque required to break loose rusty bolts/nuts. The clear winner was acetone/ATF. I didn't really believe it, until I mixed some up. It really does work well. It's not as convenient as the spray cans, but I keep some in a plastic spray bottle. Make sure you shake it up before you use it.
