What would you do?? (dash bezel)

Ok here goes....my 71 instrument cluster originally just had the speedometer and the fuel gauge on the sides and in the center was the alternator and turn signal indicators. The PO cut two holes in the bezel for an after market oil psi and water temp gauges. Pretty crappy looking if you ask me. So my question is I want to get new bezel but I am not sure which one I should get. Should I go back original or should I add some gauges and get the bezel accordingly. If i am going original I am seriously considering getting the new printed circuit and instrument lens. So what would you guys do? I am also installing my new wiring harness from AAW.

Thanks

Talking Re: What would you do?? (dash bezel)

Get a 7 gauge cluster and change it over in the wiring and motor senors. You will be much happier with it in my opinion.

My truck had the 3 hole idiot light gauges also. Below area couple I did. If you go the factory 7 hole route you'll have to make some wiring changes as described here http://gmcpauls.com/Tech%2520Tips1.htm

I'd upgrade to OEM gauge cluster as above. You could pay to become a Premium Member of the site and post WTB ad for the correct OEM harness and gauge cluster - not hard too get and a relatively inexpensive route.

Re: What would you do?? (dash bezel)

I believe LMC and maybe Classic Industries sell entire turnkey setups with all gauges, PCB, and so on. Not cheap (over $700 if I recall, but check).

I can recommend TBONE as being a great guy to deal with and if he's got what you need, or can get it, the way to go. May be other vendors too, he's just the one that helped me out with a Speed Warning cluster issue and it was a good experience.

Getting ready to tackle this project on dad's truck.

Op sounds like the buggies part is done already seeing you have a temp gauge and oil gauge you may be able to use those supplies to your new gauge cluster

Re: What would you do?? (dash bezel)

Does anyone offer a plug in adapter to avoid re routing the wires? Just unplug from the three hole plug into adapter that reroutes things and plugs into 7 hole bezel?

Maybe the wiring is just so simple? And this won't avoid the hardware needed to get the temp and oil working right

It is not actually re routing the wiring but re pinning the warning light cluster connector to work on a gauge cluster. The connector for both gauge and waring light clusters is the same. Some of the terminals will need to be switched in the connector and some wiring will need to be added for the amp gauge.

Hope this helps
Tom

It would be nice if there was a female connector to mate with the male connector that plugs into the cluster. That would make it a simple plug and play. Unfortunately, there is no such connector.

I have a how to in the electrical section of this forum on how to re pin the connector.

Re: What would you do?? (dash bezel)

The bottom one is exactly what I am looking for. This would be a direct replacement minus adding the wiring for the tach, correct?

Thank you,
Heath

That would be correct Heath if you already have the standard gauge cluster (amp, temp and oil pressure gauges). The tach uses a separate harness and I also make them in my shop as well.

Thank you,
Tom

Wink Re: What would you do?? (dash bezel)

I got mine out of a 80"s model Chevy truck. I lost the second hand on the clock but it worked. Tbone redid this one also before I sold it.

Re: What would you do?? (dash bezel)

Subbing for the conversion info. I have a four speed harness with idiot lites that I want to put a tach and gauge cluster in. I see the amp gauge needs extra wiring.
Does anyone pre-make this wiring?

I don't think anyone is making a pre made wiring kit for this JJ. You have to add it in or just buy the correct wiring harness for under the hood and dash.

It is only two wires and you can find there location on a factory wiring diagram. I know one ties in to the little junction box near the battery and the other one goes to the alternator.

Hope this helps.

To add on to the clock part of this thread:
Look in 80's model trucks. I got mine out of a Suburban. Around here Subs seem to be better equipped so if your yard has a row of trucks and a row of subs, I start with the Subs.

To make a hole in the clear plastic, measure twice, then use a heated nail. I picked this nifty trick up on this board about 10 years ago.
