1972 chev pick up starting problem

Hey guys new to this site so hopefully I'm gonna by about this the right way. I just picked up a 72 Chevy 4x4. I put a new fuel pump and fuel lines on it cause the pump was gone. The truck runs great but only if I dump gas down the carb to get it going. After i prime it the truck runs great and I can shut it down and fire it up a half hour later but if I wait a couple hours it has to be primed again. It's a 350 with a Qjet carb. The truck has also been sitting for ten years. Should I pull the carb and rebuild or just take it apart and clean it ? Still new to the world of wrenching so not to sure we're to start. Thanks in advance

Welcome to the money pit!!
Take some pics of your carb so we can see what you got.
Do you have a working choke?
Is your accelerator pump working?

As gezzer said, check accelerator pump with engine off, of course. After engine has run, turn it off, look down barrel and move throttle linkage. Should see fuel squirting from side into throat.

If truck has been sitting 10 years, carb probably would benefit from cleaning and rebuild.

The accelerator pump is that lever on the top right side of your carb. Pushes down on a plunger.
Can you give us a closer shot of your second pic?

Money isn't a problem it's lack of knowledge. I thought about tossing the Qjet and buying another carb but I was told I'd get better gas mileage with the Qjet

Re: 1972 chev pick up starting problem

You can buy rebuilt carbs from several sources.
Here's a good one.
https://www.smicarburetor.com/
Or keep it in the same country and contact this guy in Vancouver area.
http://www.thecarburetorguy.com/

I've had quadrajets from both of them.

If you want to tackle a rebuild then let us know. I've got links out the wahzoo For that! LOL!!
