243 head label

Has anyone seen this before? It was on both heads at the rear. I am not sure what it is? are my heads rebuilt? Or is this factory ?

Did GM make 243 heads with different internals, like Springs, Valves etc.

Yes.

The 243s that originally came on LS6 engines ONLY (Z06, CTS-V) have the hollow stem intake valves, and sodium filled exhaust valves to allow higher RPM usage. They also have the "yellow" valve springs for use with the LS6 cam.

The 243s that came on 5.3 engines, and LS2 engines have solid stem valves. The 5.3s have "normal" springs, and I believe the LS2s also have the yellow springs....which would make sense, since the cam specs are the same as the LS6 cam.

The castings are the same.

Re: 243 head label

OK thanks for the info..... so even though they are 243's.... to put a LS6 or LS2 cam in a motor with 243 heads it will need to change the springs? anything else?
My sons truck will have a 4.8 and was thinking about putting a cam in it before I install it, but maybe not as I don't want to create any problems..

Re: 243 head label

There's a chance the 243 heads might already have the yellow springs. If not, I'd do them when you swap the cam. They are only like $60 for all of them

Apparently, these are the replacement for the LS6 yellow springs.

Re: 243 head label

Do I need to upgrade springs on the 243 heads with an xr259 cam?

Re: 243 head label

I'd really consider replacing the springs ANYTIME you do a cam on a junkyard motor. While you won't need anything like beehive springs or doubles, a good set of springs and hardened pushrods should be done with ANY cam job IMO.

The added seat pressure could always prematurely wear and break an old spring. ALL springs have a lifecycle before they break. Its something I've seen with friends who bought performance-oriented vehicles or engines used.

Re: 243 head label

The motor has 83k on it that is why I asked. Thanks for the info. I may just change the cam etc just because I have not worked on an ls motor yet. And since it is for a 4x4 a torquey cam would do good for the 4.8 ly2.

A set of the blue springs i linked to earlier would be perfect for that cam.

You gotta pick something the Video Channel guy HASN'T done a video on ....thanks...

Seriously tho, I don't like most of the video's on the topic because the instructions in the factory service manual is better. Here is the PDF for ya

Re: 243 head label

If you can fall off of a chair, you can do a cam swap in an LS.

It doesn't get much easier.
