budget friendly 700+ hp BBC build

This is a project I started in may some time. I wanted to build a budget friendly 467 with good solid parts that will last a long time. For the naysayers, yes it can be done with patience and cruising the internet for good deals. We will be building a truck around this engine for a few events but thats for another build thread. A lot of part in this motor were bought used and checked out to make sure it was as good as new.

Stock 2 bolt 454 block (used)
stock steel crank (used)
ARP main studs (new)
Crower 6.385 long rod (used)
race-teck N2O piston (new)
13.5:1
Dart oval port alum heads no port work (used)
Clay smith solid roller (new)
Crower roller lifters (new)
Summit single plane intake (new)
Holley 850dp (used) freshened by the carb shop.

On motor is made 752hp@6700 and it will take 300 on the bottle easy and 500 on a controller.

We are thinking is has another 48hp in it with a tunnel ram and twin carbs or maybe with a better intake and a 1050. The 850dp was way out of wack.

The motor, carb to pan was built for under $6k and should last me quite a while, or until I get bored and start making changes. But it goes to show that with patients you can build a really solid bullet with out spending a ton of cash.

BBC's tend to like dominators. I've seen a few combos that work well with the 4150 intake with an adapter for the 4500. Good intakes and dominators killed tunnel rams a long time ago.

There may be some gains in intake porting alone or a better intake, but Ive seen BBC's loose power after port matching an intake on an engine dyno.

Whats the cam specs?

Rockers and valvetrain specs? Springs?

Oil control is a big issue with BBC's as well. What are you using for a pan, windage tray and oil pump?

It has a high flow pump on it and a jet boat pan for now, no windage tray. I had the builder do all the wizbang oiling mods to try and let this thing live a long healthy life.

Standard crane gold rockers and a girtle. Shaft rockers will be a upgrade in the future. I will have to pull out the book to get spring pressures but because I want to buzz this thing for long enduro style runs we ended up putting a lighter spring then George at clay smith wanted. I was scared his choice would self distruct. He had more of a drag race plan in mind. 278@.050 and .773lift both exhaust and intake. There may be some left on the table with the cam, but for the first selection I'm happy.

I compared my summit intake to the victor jr and they look like the same casting minus a name. It needed a lot of love port matching. That was worth some good power. And I gave the inside a little love as well. I think with a few small changes it's got 800 in it easy. Which will be perfect. I want to drive this motor to work when I can.

Note: we used q16 for fuel. And I'll make sure that in it for the nitrous passes but it will love 110 too. Although it doesn't have a light ring pack, it really liked the 3 vane moroso vacuum pump.

You'll find a lot of summit brand parts are re-branded big name parts. Usually mid-level to good quality stuff.

I'd really love to see how a e-85 dominator performs on top of that engine. e-85 and a boat might not mix well though.

So this is in a boat then? I looked back and didnt catch anything other than it has a boat pan. The camshaft starts to make more sense now and wanting to upgrade to shaft rockers. I have to believe theres alot on the table with a windage tray and crank scraper for a boat with sustained high rpms.

Not to take the wind out of your sails but 800HP with 13.5:1 compression on race gas doesn't sound very streetable. So does that mean I should have spent more than the $3K I used for the twin turbo 4.8L truck motor I built with a very low mile [40000ish miles] with a pair of ebay turbo's and ebay full roller rockers and head studs? Most everything is used except the turbo's, rockers and studs. Oh I forgot the A to A intercooler is new and with a bone stock motor with 1.8 rockers I'm making about 650HP at the crank on premium no ethanol pump gas.

But BBC's are still cool in any form.

Yes, Summit balancer and intake. The intake needed a lot of love to match the gaskets but I am happy with it. I should have gone with a dominator set up but its always fun to make power on a 850dp

E85 has been tossed around. and is still a maybe. It was originally designed for a boat. But with a drag strip less than 20 miles from the shop, it might find its way into the new freds truck parts "shop truck."

Not taking any wind away at all. With a few changes it will make 800hp and a push of a button makes it close to 1300 which should be funm, and with the quality parts, it should last. Im lucky to have worked for F&L racing fuels so race gas isnt a big deal for me.

The Gen3 small block on turbos is awesome and had the parts sitting here to go that route. But for ease of installation in a boat then in a truck and in a drag car, the N/A big block was easier. This motor will see a lot of street miles im sure.

Sounds like a good build. I love simple big blocks like this that make power and get it done.. have you sprayed on q16 before? I know the jetting has to be calibrated specifically for that fuel

Do you have the dyno sheets and who did the machine work? Also, what kind of gas are you using? At 13.1 CR, are you running a ~108 octane race gasoline?

We needed to jet way fatter for q16. But at 11pm I didnt want to drain the dyno tank from the prior motor and refill with 110.

A local machine shop down here in San Diego did the machine work, DRC Machine. I have the dyno sheet on my phone, Ill try and figure out how to get it up. I also have a few videos from the dyno. just cruising around I will run F&L SP-1, 110 octane. But if its going to the track on the bottle I might put q16 in it, might run 110. Just depends on whats around and how much I have planned ahead.

From what I've read you pretty much have to have a carb specifically setup for q16 and it's not very nitrous friendly because it's so highly oxygenated and you can hurt things pretty fast. Not sure how you plan on swapping back and forth between the two fuels easily is what I'm getting at

I get what your saying now.

Im not 100% sure how the fuel thing is going to play out yet. I need to build the truck and go from there. Still lots to do before Sept rolls around. But Im not to worried about Q and N2O. A good A/F guage and we always start very conservative.

I understand that! I've been wanting to try e85 for a while but I would like to get it lined out on gasoline first. I wish I would have put some compression in mine when I built it.

E85 would be cool but I dont have any stations within 30 miles, the moisture and maintinence are a turnoff.

So like 625 to the ground . If you are sprying 500 your the man . Also moisture and maintenience with E85 (ethanol) are negligable , if any at all and im less than 4 miles off the gulf and 100% humidity 80% of the year . Methanol is the corrosive one .

E-85 to 108 is gonna run like a turd if it's out of the same carb. You need to jet super fat for e-85. I though of converting to e-85 also. Only 1 station even remotely close to me. Not worth it in my opinion. Are all the blends the same with e-85?

Nice build by the way. My next motor will be a pump gas 496 hydro roller. Father son project.

Sounds very streetable to me. I'm at about 950 HP (555 cu in; 13.5:1) and the car is very docile - until you put your foot in it.

There is a bit that goes into the E85 swap. so right now Im focused on getting the truck done and running then maybe a swap to a dominator then maybe the e85 swap.

Q is magic! ok just heavily oxygenated but still magic haha. I just wish is wasnt so expensive. Im ok with race gas under $10 but $14+ gets a bit out of hand when its a "street" engine.

What if you ran a meth injection? Still run pump gas but have the injection also help with the high compression? My buddy runs it on his sn95 mustang. Boost the hell out of it and runs fine. Just a thought.

To complicated for me. I think a single dominator or 2 will squeeze all the power that little motor has in it. Im really impressed we made the number we did on a oval port head. Everyone was expecting high 600s.

E85 will make it cheap to put miles or, or get really friendly with the VP Rep.
