pinon seal nut 68 chevy c-10
Sorry if this is a stupid question. My seal is leak at the rear end where the drive shaft hooks up. I have the drive shaft disconnect buy I do not have wrench or socket big enough. My 15/16 is too small and my 1 1/2 socket is too big. Can anyone tell me what size box enc wrench or socket I need. Thanks

I would suggest Harbor Freight on this one. I had the same problem, too small, too big. I caught it on sale but the origianl price was only $17 more. Its a 3/4 drive socket and ratchet set. I think I paid $34 for it, maybe a little more/less.

Just did the seal on my '67 C-10 last weekend. 1 1/8" socket. Mark the nut where it is before you remove it and count the turns as you back it off. I also used a big pipe wrench to hold the pinion flange while I loosened and retorqued it. Would have been a 15 minute job if I had gotten the right seal from the parts guy.

pinon seal
thanks for the reply, I just got back from a friends house that has the range of socket mention. It is 10 pm here and going out now to see if I can get the nut off. May just wait til morning.
What is the deal about marking the nut etc and counting the turn. I do not set a cotter key for example like on wheel bearing so I just assumed it would go back on wi so many footpounds or as strong as I can get. |

The pinion has a crush sleeve which is SUPPOSED to be only used one time. As long as you know how far the nut was on originally you can get it back close enough. I myself don't bother to count the turns or mark the nut. I "feel" it out as I go. Its not the correct way but it hasn't let me down, Yet..... Do NOT tighten it as tight as it will go. This will lock the pinion up against the ring gear and it will bind. The motor will turn it over and free it up but it will only last 10 miles or so before you have to replace the ring and pinion.
