Doors will not lock

I will be installing my new interior this week and would like to get this fixed so I feel safe when it's parked in parking lots. knobs will push down inside but when you close the door and you can just open it right back up like they never locked. does the same way thing when you lock it with the key from outside. Turn the key and the knob goes down but door opens up without unlocking.

They have to be locked with the key from out side.... keeps you from locking your keys inside.... Not sure why youre still able to open after locking with key though

Re: Doors will not lock

Over the years my doors wouldn't lock with the key. The tumbler just would not turn. My truck is parked in the back yard, so my concern was low. Eventually, the problem got bad enough they couldn't be locked from the inside either.

I pulled them out and gave them a nice ultrasonic bath with a hot water/Simple Green solution. I studied how they work, and oiled all moving parts. Now they work like I imagine they did new!

What I found is they are designed to prevent owners from locking their keys in. There is no way around this, even if you ground off some of the functions of the mechanism, you'd prevent something else from working.

Regards,
Mike

P.S. If the door opens when locked, it might not be completely locked. The mechanism is probably gunked up with dirt, like mine were.

The key is not turning far enough to actuate the lock mechanism so the lock knob is not going down far enough. Try pushing in on the door while you turn the key to lock it.... You should also lubricate the door latch and the locking mechanism.

If you roll the window down and use a good strong flashlight you can see the latch and lock mechanism down through the window channel, in back of the window.

First off there are no stupid questions as we all need help sooner or later but to answer your question, I use graphite...

Re: Doors will not lock

someone years ago had a thread on how to disable the auto-unlock by grinding a tab on the latch. But then you better have a spare key hidden somewhere

All I ever use on lock parts and lock cylinders is spray lubricant with teflon. The only problem with the Graphite that 7tee mentions is that people get really carried away with it. It tends to hold moisture and turns into a gummy mess inside the lock cylinders.

Smile Re: Doors will not lock

Thanks all. Little lube and gentle pressure and both doors lock now. Once again I have to say this is the best message board I have ever used.

I'd like to see that approach. From what I can tell, the tab you are referring two serves two purposes. Removing the tab would prevent both actions.

I do forget what the other action was.

Mike
