cleaning rotors

My rotors have been sitting with a tarp over them and they have developed a layer of surface rust on the breaking surface. Can I just clean that off with a wire wheel?

Re: cleaning rotors

You don't want to gouge them, I'd use steel wool.

Re: cleaning rotors

Flap wheel on a grinder works perfectly, or, take them in and have them turned. Steel wool won't be tough enough. A D/A sander with coarse grit will work, too.

Re: cleaning rotors

How bad is the rust? A little will not hurt anything. Nothing preventing them from rusting up when sitting in the driveway for a couple weeks.

If it is just light, I would use 120-grit sandpaper in a sanding block. A good shop will put a similar non-directional finish on the surface to facilitate pad break in anyway.

Re: cleaning rotors

You can soak them overnight or a little longer in vinegar. Then the rust should wipe off with a scotchbrite pad. Then neutralize them with baking soda water, dry and coat them with a light oil until you are ready to put them to use.

I was worried that would hurt the pads.
