Panic! Did I spend $600 on the wrong column?

[Later edit - just for context, it turns out to be the correct column; photo added in later post]

My original on the right, the one I purchased from a forum member (who restores them) on the left.

As you can see it's quite different; it lacks the detent plate for the automatic transmission, among other things.

Am I hooped here? Did I get sold a three-on-the-tree column? I can't imagine tilt columns and standard transmissions were common together...

Please advise, as you can imagine, I'm stressed. I don't think they even made 3-speed tilt columns, but I can't imagine how this will provide reverse lockout and so on. To be clear, the top end is automatic (shift indicator, all of that).

I'm using a 200-4R trans, so perhaps he removed them because they'd be "wrong" for the shift positions on the detent plate? And so I rely on the ones in the transmission? But that doesn't lock out reverse, etc.

Thanks!
Dave

No pics showing but the non tilt has the detents down low, outside the firewall, and the tilts have the detents up high in the column. I'm guessing that is what you are comparing.

Without a picture, it's hard to tell, but the tilts do not have a detent plate. Don't know what you mean by "...among other things...". I posted a picture of the 3 tilts that will work in our trucks in post 10 of this thread. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=672309

Mine works great with my TH400. Not sure if the 200-4R requires anything different.

Call the guy you bought the tilt from. He knows them inside/out, quite literally. He will tell you exactly what is going on.

Re: Panic! Did I spend $600 on the wrong column?

I already reached out, and he got back to me assuring me it's fine. There don't seem to be any detents in the column, though, as it rotates freely. I think the trans has them internally, but I'm not sure how the column's end works. Perhaps the shifter handle must be installed for that, and I haven't done so yet.

So, it looks like all is well.

Your pic well illustrates the difference between the ends of a tilt (left) and non-tilt (right) column.

Re: Panic! Did I spend $600 on the wrong column?

Adding the shifter handle (had to harvest my old roll pin, but he may have supplied one) did indeed make the detents work. Of course I wanted to make sure I had the right column before I installed all of the pieces!

It's a little gritty, perhaps media blasted, but otherwise smooth and tight!
