Greetings...

I just picked up a '74 dump that was billed as a 1 ton...definitely 3/4 front end (not "bud" style wheels as we call them all around here, and 8 lugs...). Rear is dually.

Anyway, does anyone know what I've got under here, what the capacities are, and what else they were used in? I'm trying to figure how much I can put in the dump (does have the overload springs, and I'm pretty sure it's all factory...).

I'm assuming the front is a Dana 44...., and am mostly wondering about the rear end (same as 1 ton 2wd, or is it really a 3/4 ton axel as well? What other vehicles might it have been used in? (in case I come across a parts truck

Should be a 14 bolt Full-Floating axles. And do you think somebody converted from 1-ton front end to 3/4 ton? Are you sure it doesn't have a D60 in the front? D60s and D44's look pretty similar on the diff cover. But D44 has ball-joints and the D60 has king-pins.

also, d60 has only one ubolt on the passenger side of the diff, and then 2 studs where the other ubolt should go. and there will be a slight bump above the fill plug on the diff cover that the d44 doesn't have.

the rear axle is most likely a 14 bolt, but could be a dana 70. count the diff cover bolts. 14=14 bolt, 10=dana 70.

The dana 60 did not appear until 77 for the one tons. To add to Adam's post the dana 70 and 14 bolt are for all practical purposes identical in strength.

Well, I haven't crawled down in the snow to count the bolts yet, but I DID check out the plate inside the door:

Front Axel Capacity-3500lbs
Rear Axle Capacity -3950lbs (or may have been 3850)

Thanks for all your help! I picked it up and drove it to a shop tonight (needs new rear brake line, possibly wheel cylindars with my luck).

That 3500 is right in there for a dana 44.

Ok, more info...any comments regarding true capacity of the truck would be appreciated!

GVWR 6800 (inside door panel)
Vehicle weight 4200 or so (I'm assuming it's there for a 1 ton?

Rear axle is 14 bolt, as you all thought. Nice 8.75 x 16.5 's all around.

Does not have overload springs on rear, and it does not look like a factory bed (on the factory dumps I've seen the hinges were integral to the chassis-here it's placed on top of the chassis and shimmed with wood. Looks like a job well done, or a professional job around here...)

Any other location to find out more info on truck? All the identifying markings were removed when it was repainted and not replaced....

Thanks again for all your help! Once I get a rocker and fender replaced I'll try and post an image of this beast!

6800 GVWR is a 3/4 ton, not a 1 ton.

Yeah my 70 has a GVWR of 7000. (7200 max I believe)

I kept the drivetrain. Body/bad and chassis are gone. 1981 K30, 350/465/205 dana 60 and dually 14 bolt. Has a G80, and a flat bed. Going to replace the flat bed. 1985 K20, 350/400/208 10 bolt and SF 14 bolt. I wonder where I can find some 1 tons. Hmmmmm
