charging problem
I have a problem with batteries going dead. I just put a new alt. on but I think the wiring under the hood is screwed up. I need to know how the charging systems wires are run,colors and directions. I've looked in the chiltons but they just tell colors. I need routing also. If I jump start the truck it runs fine It's just not charging the battery. The truck is equipt with 350 2barrel.

Do you have access to a voltmeter? You should see around 13 or 14 volts on the battery terminals with it running. If not, your alternator is not working or like you said the wires are bad. Check the alternator ouput terminal(red) to ground with it running. Should be the same 13 or 14 volts. If its there and not at the battery, you have wiring probs.

If you have a volt meter, put it on dc, then red to positive, black to negative, crank truck and check what the reading is. It should be at least 13.5 or 14 volts. If it is anything less it ant charging. It's the voltage regulator and not the alternator in less you have swap it for a later one. If you have the right voltage it could be something drawing it down. How long does it take to kill the battery, couple of hrs.,days. Hope this helps.

I feel ya brother. I have the same problem as you do. I am going to do this to stop it.
1. you have to consider what you want out of your truck, do you want to make a rod or a resto? If you want to make a rod, you only need a few wires. headlights are a must! there are only about ten dif. wires that you need. The battery ground, the pos. wire to the starter, the starter to coil/hei the power to wiring harness, and a few accessory wires to run the inside compartment/taillights/tach etc. the PO probable had a connection for every accessory possible, and probably burned a few together in the process of owning it. I checked under my hood today, and I found a wire, for the dual electric cooling fans that I run and found a bare wire touching the frame, grounding it out, draining the battery. so get in there, and clear out all of the garbage, wrap plastic heatshielding around the wires, screw the wires to the inner fenderwells with wire brackets. about 4 hours aught to do it. good luck! -- also if you need diagrams, try factory shop manuals. they are a little less vague. |

shortbed, I had the same problem on my Panel, check for proper ground. I think mine runs from the battery to the alt. bracket, and then from the alt bracket to the frame.

Regulator should be found on the inside of the radiator support on the drivers side. This might be a good time to change over to the newer style alternator with the built in regulator.

The square black box in this photo is the voltage reg. Ignore the way the wires are jumped. That plug should be plugged into it. These are dirt cheap at any parts store and if your new alt is not charging, I'll bet it is your regulater...10 bucks maybe.
