Blue painters tape?

I have about a 125 mIle trip to make from Eureka Ks to my house to finally get the old girl home. With all the rain we have had this spring the bugs are thick as heck right now. Will using blue painters tape on the nose of my truck and grill save me hours of detail work removing bugs or create another mess? Any better ideas welcome.

Re: Blue painters tape?

Just wax the heck out of it. Maybe just leave it on, no wipe till you get home?

Re: Blue painters tape?

Use 3M (Green) auto body masking tape. Available at any auto parts store. You can use the yellow also. I recommend the bright green because it is thicker and holds together and sticks better , esp in water ( via rain or wet-sanding). Any glue residue from the tape wil not harm your finish and can be removed with (again I recommend) Mothers spray cleaner and wax. I worked as a painter/body tech for 14 years and 2 as a mobile detail'er so quality comes in brand name products, hence the 3M and Mothers. good luck

Re: Blue painters tape?

I second Stepsider I'd give new paint at least a week if not 2. Some paints actually take a year + to fully cure

Re: Blue painters tape?

The paint is 4 years old just only has 450 miles on it since the frame off. Didn't have storage at the new house until just last month and my father-in-law picked up a new toy that he will need the shop room for. Just hwy gun shy picked up a dent from a rock last time out on my nos 67 GMC grill trying not to have a repeat.

Re: Blue painters tape?

I personally would just drive it. It's a truck. Not an original portrait of the Mona Lisa.
I've got a 67 Chevelle that's kinda on the high end with a laser straight black paint job on it. 9000 miles so far, and yes, some rock chips. I touch em up occasionally and figure if they get bad enough some day I will re-shoot the nose.
YOU GOTTA DRIVE EM. That's the only way you get back any kind of return on investment. Not to mention the smiles you get in your heart and head every time someone gives you a thumbs up.

Re: Blue painters tape?

What about using one of those plastic-like static cling window signs. No tape to mess with, easy on/off & good in rain. Maybe you could hit up your local parts store, Taco Bell or somebody like that for an old one.

Re: Blue painters tape?

Years ago I used to spray PAM all over the front and hood of my 70 Charger when I went a few hundred miles to a car show. When you get where you are going just wash the Pam and any bugs off with a garden hose.

Re: Blue painters tape?

Its a non issue. Wax it. Drive it. Detailing it is part of it.

If 125 mi is too far, doesnt sound like your going to drive it much or cruise places.
Better get an enclosed trailer..

smear vasaline all over it. then keep the rest of the tub in your glovebox or center console so you'll have it in a handy place when you need it again.

I did something similar with some blue tinted plastic wrap I got from the guy that painted my truck when I took it on a 4 hour trip on an open car hauler. It's pretty much like saran wrap, but heavier. pics below - it came off easily and didn't leave any adhesive residue. I did have 3M blue tape on the wheels and the residue was a pain to get off because I had the tape on for too long. The yellow or green body 3M autobody tape would have been better.

This comment coupled with the Ron Jeremy profile pic made me blow a funny fuse.

Re: Blue painters tape?

Don't use tape. The sun and heat will bake the adhesive on.
It will be a pain to remove. Wax well then spray on pam.

Re: Blue painters tape?

Since this is an epic run for the truck, get a wrap for the nose made that looks like a frog. All the bugs will zig out of the way. Ones that don't, the wrap will take care of. It's a no brainer!

Re: Blue painters tape?

do not put masking take on if it might be exposed to rain. if the tape is left on after its exposed to water it will cause the glue to set and then it will be a royal pain to remove
