The 600 will actually increase mileage a wee bit if you can handle keeping your foot out of it. lol Dual exhaust and an HEI will help alot as well. I used to 4 down to 2 barrel adapter on mine. When I go through the engine I'll be having a magnum intake machined to fit the 4 barrel. Putting the 600 on there so far was the best thing I did. That engine will drink the fuel though....man...lol I lugged it up a hill in 3rd almost from a dead stop and could literally dump all that fuel in it and no problem. haha No HEI either.

Dang...TJ types faster than me.
lol. I have yet to see a factory shroud on these. They seem to run fine without one due to the angle of the fan blades.

Re: Help please

Hey Kingsolver, I'm glad you got "Bluejay" home and she is running good. I noticed your radiator looks like it's had some repair on it. I just mention it since it's a new truck to you and until you drive it a little there may be a few gremlins to keep an eye on.

Hey thanks for the heads up. I drove it 60 miles coming home last night. I was worried because I didn't know that it didn't need a shroud. I kept an eye on the temp gauge. It never indicated that it got hot,but I don't know the truck yet as you correctly warn. I am always open to advice and I appreciate it very much.

I got it insure and tagged today. I didn't get much work done today.

Thanks. I just read your "Chrustine semi build" thread. I have learned some things from that.

Thanks, she's been a fun truck for sure. Hoping to take and have dual exhaust put on next month.

My 1965 C-50 GMC never had a shroud. Had they even been invented back then ?

The water pump is not as big as it looks. Actually, the pump is just a round insert that bolts into that big standoff housing. I takes about five minutes to change one once you get the radiator drained and the fan blade off

Nice find! Too bad it's not a four speed SM420, but you'll probably just be driving it on the street anyway.

Re: Help please

I didn't realize in the begining that I'd want make it a daily driver..thinking about using the 70 for special occasions.
I think that bluejay needs dual exhaust also. I want to keep the points ignition.
But want to toss the edelbrock on if I can gain mileage and not lose the power. At this point I have no idea what kind of mileage it gets.
The po lowered it a bit but, I want a bit more drop. I don't know if I can get much lower with a static drop. Don't want to throw any duckies towards bagging it.
I'm also afraid tlower any more than it is now because it drives straight as an arrow.

Re: Help please

The guy I bought the truck from installed a new gas tank. Looks rather small to me. This isn't the correct size tank is it?

Re: Help please

That looks about right to me. I don't know the capacity of these tanks, but on the drivers side my tank is about flush with the seat and on the passenger side it is about 6 inches in from the end of the seat. The heigth does not go above that recessed part of the cab so it looks close. Are those straps in the original location on the brackets in the floor?

Re: Help please

The straps are in the original location. Guess I'm learning new things. Probably a 16 gallon tank? I wouldn't think it's a 20 gallon tank.
Side note. I was looking at the engine earlier to see which 305. (It's an E.) got to thinking about the 67-72 trucks and how they are referred to as the "Glamour truck" I'm thinking the 60-66 trucks should be identified as the "Manly truck". They are beefy. The timing pointer looks like a shank.

Mine has a points ignition and I have no issues. You won't loose any power with a 4 barrel and dual exhaust...the increase will pleasantly surprise you. lol

305E was the most powerful of the 305 series. They had a A,B,D,and E. lol Don't get me started on the rest of them.

Thanks tj! You fellas are serious over here. I should've bought that 66 years ago.
I guess I need to research linkage...factory linkage probably won't work?
You guys have been a big help.
