How to tell if truck was originally a 6 or V8

Is there some way on the Chevy 64-66 trucks to tell via the vin or data plate if the truck was originally a 6 or V8?

Re: How to tell if truck was originally a 6 or V8

Well, best way would be to find out what engine it has currently. If it has a 350...more than likely it had a straight 6. If it has a 283 or 327 it could be original. If you can give me the year and what engine/tranny it has currently I can probably make an accurate guess. lol

No way to tell off the VIN or data plate. If you get lucky enough to find a build sheet in the seat it would say which motor it came with.

Unhappy Re: How to tell if truck was originally a 6 or V8

Thanks. That's what I was afraid of. Was actually looking at an instrument cluster wth tach from a donor truck. No motor in truck. My understanding is there are 2 different tachs, one for a 6 and one for a V8. Could not tell the difference unless the tach is out of the cluster, and then only by the part number.

Canadian VIN numbers indicated whether there was a 6 or 8.
You could look on the frame to see if there's scars from the engine mounts being moved.
The engine wiring harnesses were different.
The rad cores is sometimes an indicator.
Length of the original battery cables.
Some more experienced guys will correct and add to this.

No engine in the truck...are the mounts still there? If you could show us a picture of them we may be able to tell.

You can tell by where the radiator lower brakets are mounted, down low on crossmember is 6cyl, higher and towards front is 8 cyl.
