67 hood repair

So on my 67 c10 some one has mounted one of those ugly bug deflectors years ago, drilling four holes in the hood. they are right where there are no supports , kind of where the hood would be tin can like when you push on it. How can these be repaired? I want to weld the holes but am sure it would warp bad with little heat. My friend mentioned using the glue they install body panels with and glue a small repair patch from the underside and skim coat it with fill...any ideas??

I had a similar problem repairing mirror holes in doors on a spec miata racer. Drill out the holes to 1/2 in diameter, fabricate 1/2 in diameter discs out of 16 or 18 Ga cold rolled sheet. Back them with something that will hold them flush with the finish side. masking tape works well for that and just 'spot' them in with a MIG. Once in place a TIG will finish the seam making them invisible after a little surface grinding. You can't do that with panel adhesive.

Why bother to drill them larger to weld them? Just a few tacks would do it. Turn down the wire speed and then up the heat just a touch and then when welded they will almost be flat. Hit it with a flapper wheel and no one will ever know they were there. If you need a backer that is fine but small as those holes should be they should weld right up.

Too much chance of over-grinding on very thin Japanese metal doors! Besides, they don't stress crack at the welds when they are more than just a screw hole.

Re: 67 hood repair

panel bond works great for the application you intend ,put metal behind , fill with all metal , and finish with putty

Differential expansion between panel bond and sheet metal will make the holes 'telegraph' through the paint in the sun and eventually, a crack will form in the paint at the seam.
