I used to help a guy with his dirt track car. They had to run stock 12 bolt rearends. They could upgrade to better axles if wanted. Hid Dad was backing him and told him to buy some good axles for it. He said nope. It's fine. Well, the whole season, he had been dominating at the track. He had done stuff to his car that the others didn't have, like 4 wheel disc brakes, brake adjusters, etc. He was killing them in the turns. Rear drum brakes make for a automatic push in a race car. The stuff he had wasn't illegal, but the others didn't think of it.
Anyway, after his Dad telling him this, he goes the race Saturday night, and was leading the race. Yep, you guessed it. A axle broke, he destroyed the car. It took him a month to get it back in decent shape to race. By this time, everyone had the same stuff. They had seen what he had when he landed on the top in the wreck. After this, he polled the track to let them run 9" Ford rears. No more wrecks from broken axles, but it was too late. His domination had ended. If you want to see a dirt track car get totally destroyed, let the axle break in a non floater rear. When the wheel comes off, it's not a pretty sight. ![]()
