Re: Stock posi rear end or Eaton Posi Trac?

Well, I'm just happy to know that a good eaton is a good LSD option and when properly set up, (perhaps not as tight as ol Tom above) it'll get down the road without pushin me into unplanned 360s and 720s if I hit a patch of squirrel piss on a light downhill curve full of tar snakes and 5 salt granules left over from the winter slush.

The 30 spline 6 lug axles from '65 to early '70 are all the same length.

So will any 30 spline 6 lug chevy axles work in my '64 rear end? or are there different diameter/length axles over the years?

Thanks Cap'n. Shouldn't bee too hard to find some for scrap value considering all the long boxes rotting in fields around here.

Ended up going with a Detroit truetrac. Now need to find some axles and somebody to install it. Thanks for all the input!

Talking Re: Stock posi rear end or Eaton Posi Trac?

I bought a 1964 12 bolt posi from a friend, it has the older posi unit that was built only in 1964 and 1965. I did dome research on this posi unit, turns out it uses the same posi clutches and steels as the 1964/65 Corvette. I tried several rear end places, Randy's, drivetrain specialties, tom's rear ends, etc....I got the factory part num,ber from a Friend who works for a Chevy dealer (p/n 3830740) I'll double check the number, but I'm pretty sure this is right. it uses 8 frictions and 8 steels. I know there are sources for the corvettes. I'll post a few pictures of this differential later tonight.
Have a good one!
Ben

here's a few pictures of the Differential carrier and the posi clutches and steels.......totally different from your normal "Eaton" type posi carrier......
and the p/n is correct...3830740 (for the clutches/steels)
Hope this helps anyone who winds up with one of these, there are some parts, now if I can find a procedure for disassembly and re-assembly for the one I have! ( Hint, Hint)

Have a good one!

Re: Stock posi rear end or Eaton Posi Trac?

I rebuilt one of those posi units 34 years ago. The difficult part was getting the springs compresses to be able to remove them. Back then I lacked the patience, and broke the aluminum plates around the spring pockets. I just repaired them with weld. The springs seemed to go back in easier than they came out. Back then the clutches were still available from a GM dealer.

Re: Stock posi rear end or Eaton Posi Trac?

I ended up using a Tru-Trac unit in a couple of my last build (cars) and they work great. Tru-tracs make no noise and lock and unlock very easy. I used one in my 65 build as well but, sadly it's not running at this time. I will post a report on it when it gets rolling. Sorry for the hijack but, thought you guys might want another option.

Are we sure this is the correct part number for the posi unit in the 1964 C10 3.73 truck, with the WA code stamped on the axle?
