Needs an Attitude Adjustment

My grandpa has this very nice 1986 Silverado C10 shortbed. Has a 305 that runs perfect. Like new inside and out and a great daily driver with the coldest AC I have ever experienced in a vehicle. I may have an opportunity to purchase this fine truck and while I do love the original look there is something that needs to be done. It needs a good attitude adjustment to bring it up to date and make it a good looking daily driver and not a grandpa truck. Not doing anything soon but I like to plan ahead. I have seen some wonderful trucks on this forum and I would love to know what do yall think needs to be done to this truck? What do yall think will give it a better look?

Re: Needs an Attitude Adjustment

Lose the running boards.
Swap the rear bumper for a 'sport' (blazer/burb) bumper.
Lower it 4/6 (drop spindles, coils, & a flip-kit).
Appropriate size tires for the drop if keeping the ralleys.
Aftermarket exhaust system.

I wouldn't mess with perfection. I think it looks great as it is. If you really need to impress the kids then go ahead and pimp it out. Gramps would not approve.

Re: Needs an Attitude Adjustment

That is one pretty truck for sure, I am more into the factory appearing look.

I would just remove the running boards, change the exhaust to a factory style exit (both sides), replace the rear bumper with a factory style step bumper and last but not least get ride of the white walls.

Here is a truck a friend of mine finished recently with the blue/gray paint combo. The blue is gloss and the gray is a matte finish.

Or (no offense implied/intended), don't worry about doing things for anyone except the current owner. Gramps or 'the kids' can change it to whatever they want when they own the truck. I personally would keep ralleys but I would stagger the F/R sizes vs swapping on large diameter wheels.

Here's a great example of clean, OE appearing, classic perfection......

You are the one who has to look at it every day. It doesn't matter what other people suggest - build it the way YOU want it.

Having said that,

Don't do ANYTHING to the truck until you've poked around on this site long enough to know what you like and what you want. Then Give'r!

Re: Needs an Attitude Adjustment

I tend to agree with Scoti. But, I also like the look of nice 20" rims that compliment the overall look.

If it were mine to make a DD, I would loose the running boards, do a flip kit and c-notch in the rear, 2.5" drop spindles and cut one coil in the front to make the stance nice without worrying about bottoming out. For the wheels and tires I have 2 thoughts, swap on the front ralleys for 7" or even 6.5' wide rims with a 215 or 225/70-15 tire, the rear go with a 255/70-15 tire on the current 8" wide ralleys (like the red truck above). The other option for me would be a set of 20" in 8.5" wide with 5" or 5.25" BS with a 255/45-20 tire in the front and a 10" wide with a 5.25" to 5.5" BS with a 315/35-20 (or 295/40-20) tire for the rear.

Look at either Sunburn or White Trash for the 20" wheel combo with the 315/35 rear tire. N2TRUKS '77 with Vintecs looks good too!

That's my opinion, but the only one that counts is what the owner likes!

If it were my truck.... I'd leave it as-is. Running boards and all. It's a classic time capsule and looks gorgeous.

Scoti,
Thank you for complimenting on my truck, when I originally started on the truck I had a steel roll pan molded in and was going with a cowl induction hood. But after a few years sitting in the garage and I began reading and looking on this great forum my likes changed. I cut the roll pan off, sold the cowl hood and decided to go with the factory look plus stance and motor/trans. I'm very glad I decided to go this way and again, Thank You for your remarks.

No problem. I think you made some tough decisions but the final result speaks for itself! Put that bad-boy up for another multi year rest & it will still look 'classic' when it comes back out.

Classic never goes out of style .

Re: Needs an Attitude Adjustment

Thanks for the suggestions yall! Scoti, I love the look of that red truck! Has a nice stance with a stock appearance, thats pretty much what I am shooting for. I have quite a hoard of GM rally wheels so that is already covered. I am gonna spend a few hours this evening searching and looking over threads on here to see what I like/dislike. Thanks again yall!

Re: Needs an Attitude Adjustment

The bigger the dreams, the less likely they are to come true.

If it were me, I'd start small. Get rid of the running boards, update the rear bumper, and some new wheels and tires.

If I feel like going further, THEN I would look towards lowering kits and the major suspension upgrades like that.

Re: Needs an Attitude Adjustment

4/6 drop, get rid of all the diamond plate. Don't put 20s or other big ol rims on it...they look bad...keep the rallys, and bad ass stereo, then drive around feeling like a bad ass

If that was my truck... I would loose the running boards and the white wall tires and leave the rest alone. That is fine looking truck.
