I guess, but this is my third metal gasket. All have been fel pro. I just find it hard to believe it is this hard to get right when there were millions of inline 6's on the road at one time. I doubt they all either had leaky exhaust or a Clifford gasket.

It really sounds like most of the leaking is coming from the gasket between the intake and exhaust manifold or around the mounting studs, but it's hard to tell for sure. Should I have used something on the studs? (the ones that mount the intake manifold not the ones into the head).

Only thing I can think of is that the head warped or the intake flanges aren't straight. Like I said...I had the metal felpro gasket on mine and it sealed fine. Guess you'll have to come over to my house and let me work on it. I'll put my magic touch to work.

i think the copper spray might help. also plug wires that have lost their resistance would have that effect. make sure they are connected in correct firing order. a straight six will still run with two wires on the wrong plugs and may not pop the way a v-8 does

I checked both of them with a straight edge. If you were about 2000 miles closer I'd have already been over there.

I think the next thing I am going to do is duct tape my shop vac hose to the tailpipe and run it in reverse to see if I can pinpoint the leak.

Ok, so I have taken this apart again for the 1,000,000,000,000,000th time. As I suspected it looks like the exhaust was leaking between the manifolds. This is a brand new gasket and you can see where it is already separated in the photo:



I'm going to feel really dumb if I was supposed to have used this:



I assumed that one was to block off the heat riser? Both were in the kit. One side is metal and the other paper or cardboard, I was putting the metal against the heat side. Correct? Which one of these did you use and how did you put it together?

Do you have a service manual ? It would have all of the information you need. I bought one on DVD, best $30 I spent, have used it several times all ready. A must have working on these old trucks !

Yes I have one. Seems to me like it assumes the user has a certain amount of "common knowledge". It does not mention gasket orientation. Some things are very detailed, others are just as vague as Chiltons, Haynes, etc.

Considering it's been over 2 years since I've had a stock manifold on my engine my memory was seriously put to the test. LOL But if I remember right, yes, I used the metal cover gasket.

I think I can now take apart and reassemble a Rochester B in my sleep. "Mikes carb shop" has a great YouTube video about rebuilding this carb. Long story short, I ended up taking a small needle and cleaning out the accelerator pump passage as well as using my gun cleaning kit to free up the power valve. All this on a freshly rebuilt carb due to running some junk gas through.


BTW TJ, those gaskets I asked you about are awesome.

Glad the problem is fixed! Double congrats on not dumping a good engine for a sbc. I new you'd get it fixed.
