I have attempted to use the hard rubber plugs as well. Glued them in and they just get squeezed out over and over. I really like the idea of using an ear plug! Color it black with a sharpie and bingo. It should be soft enough to compress when the door closes without wanting to launch itself. The back side of those orange ear plugs also have a nice finished surface that would look perfect.
