Battery Disconnect

Would it pass tech inspection if I mounted my battery disconnect on the side of my truck like this? It has the on off decal I just mocked this up for reference of where I'm talking about. What do yall think?

Re: Battery Disconnect

Pretty sure the rule state has to be on the rear of the vehicle, don't have my book handy at the moment..

Re: Battery Disconnect

8:4 MASTER CUTOFF
Mandatory when battery is relocated, or as outlined in Class
Requirements. An electrical power cutoff switch (one only) must be
installed on the rearmost part of each vehicle and be easily
accessible from outside the car body. This cutoff switch must be
connected to the positive side of the electrical system and must
stop all electrical functions including magneto ignition. The off
position must be clearly indicated with the word “OFF.” If switch is
“push/pull” type, “push” must be the action for shutting off the
electrical system, “pull” to turn it on. Any rods or cables used to
activate the switch must be minimum 1/8-inch diameter. Plastic or
keyed switches prohibited. Switches and/or controls must be
located behind rear wheels on rear-engine dragsters.

Technically its part of the rear most part. lol

Re: Battery Disconnect

I'm sure tech will argue that one, Rear-most means BACK,, unless it's a dragster which really has no 'width ' at the back.

Also, that looks like a decent one, but I can't ID it. Many of the cheep rotary disconnects are only rated for 20-40 continuous amps. (a complete JOKE!)

Its summits brand. looks just like flaming river with a summit sticker. 250 continuous 2500 surge amps. Im gonna eventually run dual batteries so didnt want to waste money on the cheaper one. the problem Im running into is the back of the truck the handle runs into everything wherever i put it. I really should have bought the push pull type. I can get a kit to make it a push pull type but its like another 60$ i didnt really wanna spend till i get my dually lowered and on air.

Re: Battery Disconnect

If your doing dual batteries,,,, might consider isolating each and not running both through one switch. Bickel is quite proud of everything they sell,, but honestly quality is next to none.

This kit has dual 125 continuous switches, but for another $40 or so you can get dual 300 amp switches.

Thiat will not pass tech. The switch activation has to be accessible at the rear plane of the vehicle in case the vehicle ends up stopped with one side or the other up against a wall or barrier. The switch itself can be inboard, but the activation has to be to the rear. This is how I had my switch mounted on my old Super Gas car (just ahead of the driver side battery on the chassis)...

...note the activation lever protrudes to the outside of the trunk. You will also need to have a notation (sticker, lettering, etc.) that indicates which direction the switch shuts off the electrical system. If it is a push/pull activation, push has to be the OFF.

I talked to one of the tech guys at the track and he said it has to be on the back as well. Im going to run mine like yours but will have to do it at a later date. Im just going to mount it to the frame where I can run a rod at a later date before i take it to the track. I have to finish wiring this truck so i can get my dually on bags before LST.

Re: Battery Disconnect

Take the 2 bolts for the tail light mount and build a bracket that bolts on right there . wires will still be close to the same spot , body wont be modified , and it is visible and accessible from the rear .

Re: Battery Disconnect

Well this was my solution. Still need to mount it better but license plate will go in the middle. Ill have to add bolts on the outer edges for stability.

Re: Battery Disconnect

Nice! Be sure there is support at the rear of the panel to keep it from flexing out since there is a significant high pressure area at the point just behind the panel when the truck is at speed.

Re: Battery Disconnect

The place it's bolted to is actually the last bed brace which is a c channel type brace so it won't flex. I bolted it through both sides as well. The aluminum is also thick so it wont flex either.

Re: Battery Disconnect

This is a very simple and economical way to do it. It will mount just about anyplace with just a 1/2" drilled hole. Bumper, rear fender, rollpan....

125A Switch (carrys most any street vehicle) for $35
