Cool EMERGENCY! Broken oil dipstick!

Ok, reinstalled the old motor oil pan dipstick and went to check the oil yesterday only to find the tip of the dip stick that goes into the pan is missing. What do I do, can this cause engine damage if left floating around in there?
As always thanks for your time/advice.

Re: EMERGENCY! Broken oil dipstick!

Was the tip metal? If so, it's not floating so much as sliding around on the bottom of the pan, so I think you are OK.
If it was plastic, I still don't think you have a huge issue. It could get stuck on the oil pickup screen, but still probably not a huge issue.
If it's a new motor, and it makes you feel better, pull it and find the tip. It would be an afternoon project, but that's not the worst thing to have to do.

Re: EMERGENCY! Broken oil dipstick!

slap a big magnet on pan to keep in place and then lower pan later to find it

Re: EMERGENCY! Broken oil dipstick!

your missing the lower half of the dipstick tube causing the dipstick to hit the crank and break. Very common issue and until you replace the lower part this will keep happening.
